History
While consensus is that the flavour first originated in Canada, it is unknown who or which company first introduced the all-dressed potato chip. Yum Yum, a Quebec-based company, is known to have created a variety of the flavour in 1978.{{Cite web|last=Provencher|first=Liz|title=How to Get Your Hands on All Dressed Chips|url=https://www.thrillist.com/eat/nation/all-dressed-chips|access-date=22 April 2021|website=Thrillist|date=19 March 2020 |language=en|archive-date=22 April 2021|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210422152223/https://www.thrillist.com/eat/nation/all-dressed-chips|url-status=live}} The term "all-dressed" and its French equivalent {{lang|fr|toute garnie}} originally applied to pizza, meaning roughly "everything-on-it", deluxe, or "the works".
The term "all-dressed" extended beyond just pizza and found its way into the world of potato chips, where it refers to a combination of several different flavors: ketchup, BBQ, sour cream and onion, and salt and vinegar. Many early references to the flavour all-dressed are linked to pizza flavour potato chips.
An all-dressed chip called The Whole Shabang is produced by American prison supplier Keefe Group. It became available to the general public in 2016.{{cite news|url=https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/chips-so-good-you-ll-have-go-jail-get-them-n648241|date=14 September 2016|work=NBC News|title=Chips So Good You'll Have to Go to Jail to Get Them|access-date=6 March 2020|archive-date=23 September 2020|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200923085450/https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/chips-so-good-you-ll-have-go-jail-get-them-n648241|url-status=live}} Frito-Lay began selling all-dressed Ruffles potato chips in the United States that same year.{{cite news |last=William-Ross |first=Lindsay |date=16 September 2015 |title=FINALLY: All Dressed chips are available in the U.S. |url=http://www.vancitybuzz.com/2015/09/all-dressed-chips-america-ruffles/ |newspaper=Vancity Buzz |location=Vancouver |access-date=17 May 2016 |archive-date=11 May 2016 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160511055452/http://www.vancitybuzz.com/2015/09/all-dressed-chips-america-ruffles/ |url-status=live }} Co-op Food in the United Kingdom began selling a limited edition all dressed variety crisp as part of their Irresistible range in 2024.{{cite web | url=https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/uk/food/food-reviews/g60544403/best-crisps/ | title=These are our tasting panel's favourite crisps for snacking this summer | date=30 April 2024 }} Frito-Lay brought their All Dressed-flavoured Lay's potato chips to the United States for the first time in 2025.{{cite web |last=Chesanek |first=Carissa |date=7 January 2025 |title=Lay's Is Bringing Its Most-Requested Flavor to the U.S. For the First Time Ever |url=https://www.allrecipes.com/lays-all-dressed-chips-launch-8769856 |website=Allrecipes |access-date=13 May 2025}}
