Alternatives for community and environment (ACE) is an environmental justice community organization located in Roxbury. While ACE has traditionally focused on the Roxbury community, it has recently broadened its efforts across New England to empower lower-income and communities of color who face disproportionate exposure to environmental hazards, including urban heat island effects, air pollution and lead poisoning. {{Cite journal |last=Agyeman |first=Julian |date=2005-07-01 |title=Alternatives for Community and Environment: Where Justice and Sustainability Meet |url=https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.3200/ENVT.47.6.10-23 |journal=Environment: Science and Policy for Sustainable Development |volume=47 |issue=6 |pages=10–23 |doi=10.3200/ENVT.47.6.10-23 |bibcode=2005ESPSD..47f..10A |issn=0013-9157|url-access=subscription }}

ACE often forms cross-boundary coalitions and operates various youth, transportation networks, and environmental health programs such as Dudley Square Organizing Project (DSOP), Roxbury Environmental Empowerment Project (REEP), T Riders Union (TRU), the Safety Net, and Environmental Justice Legal Services (EJLS). {{Cite web |title=Programs |url=https://ace-ej.org/what-we-do/programs/ |access-date=2025-02-07 |website=Alternatives for Community and Environment |language=en-US}}{{Cite journal |last=Agyeman |first=Julian |date=2005-07-01 |title=Alternatives for Community and Environment: Where Justice and Sustainability Meet |url=https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.3200/ENVT.47.6.10-23 |journal=Environment: Science and Policy for Sustainable Development |volume=47 |issue=6 |pages=10–23 |doi=10.3200/ENVT.47.6.10-23 |bibcode=2005ESPSD..47f..10A |issn=0013-9157|url-access=subscription }}
== Accomplishments ==
Some of ACE's notable accomplishments include the following:
- ACE's Environmental Justice Legal Services represented Chelsea residents in a 2007 case that prevented the construction of a diesel-fueled power plant adjacent to an elementary school.{{cite web |date=14 November 2007 |title=Developer Pulls Plans for Chelsea Power Plant |url=http://www.clf.org/newsroom/developer-pulls-plans-for-chelsea-power-plant/ |url-status=live |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20110705145226/http://www.clf.org/newsroom/developer-pulls-plans-for-chelsea-power-plant/ |archivedate=5 July 2011 |accessdate=8 June 2011 |publisher=Conservation Law Foundation}}
- In 2013, The Safety Net fought with Roxbury residents to avert the development of a Boston University-sponsored Level 4 biolab that involved Ebola and Smallpox.{{Cite web |last= |first= |title=Neighborhood Biolabs: How Safe Are They? |url=https://abcnews.go.com/Health/infectious-disease-lab-irks-bostonians/story?id=18134903 |access-date=2025-02-06 |website=ABC News |language=en}}{{Cite journal |last=Agyeman |first=Julian |date=2005-07-01 |title=Alternatives for Community and Environment: Where Justice and Sustainability Meet |url=https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.3200/ENVT.47.6.10-23 |journal=Environment: Science and Policy for Sustainable Development |volume=47 |issue=6 |pages=10–23 |doi=10.3200/ENVT.47.6.10-23 |bibcode=2005ESPSD..47f..10A |issn=0013-9157|url-access=subscription }}{{Citation |last=Agyeman |first=Julian |title=5. = Cross-boundary coalitions =
- In 1999, ACE collaborated with governmental agencies to implement [http://airbeat.org Airbeat], a real-time air pollution monitoring system in Roxbury to address the asthma, which is the historic environmental justice issue in Roxbury. Youths investigated a potential link between high asthma rates and air pollution from diesel vehicles, leading to AirBeat's development. Airbeat data was used to advocate for clean air measures such as alternative fuels for buses.{{cite journal |last1=Loh |first1=Penn |last2=Sugerman-Brozan |first2=Jodi |last3=Wiggins |first3=Standrick |last4=Noiles |first4=David |last5=Archibald |first5=Cecilia |year=2002 |title=From Asthma to AirBeat: Community-Driven Monitoring of Fine Particles and Black Carbon in Roxbury, Massachusetts |journal=Environ Health Perspect |volume=110 |issue=Supp 2 |pages=297–301 |doi=10.1289/ehp.02110s2297 |pmc=1241176 |pmid=11929741|bibcode=2002EnvHP.110S.297L }}
- In September 2009, youth members of REEP and TRU, in collaboration with the Youth Way on the MBTA, reached an agreement with Massachusetts Secretary of Transportation James Aloisi to extend the hours for student passes and investigate the feasibility of an unrestricted youth pass.{{cite news |title=T extends hours of student passes |author=Noah Bierman |url=http://www.boston.com/news/local/breaking_news/2009/09/t_extends_hours.html |newspaper=Boston Globe |date=9 September 2009 |accessdate=9 June 2011}}{{cite news |title=MBTA researches youth T pass, extends student pass |author=Yawu Miller |url=http://www.baystatebanner.com/local15-2009-09-24 |newspaper=Bay State Banner |date=24 September 2009 |accessdate=9 June 2011 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110725024547/http://www.baystatebanner.com/local15-2009-09-24 |archive-date=2011-07-25 |url-status=dead }}
- With partner organizations in the [http://massclu.org/green-justice-coalition Green Justice Coalition], ACE and its Dudley Square Organizing Project helped ensure that environmental justice considerations were included in the landmark [https://ma-eeac.org/wp-content/uploads/081209-PA-Overview.pdf 2009 Massachusetts energy efficiency plan].{{cite news |title=Doing Green Jobs Right |author=Amy Dean |url=http://www.thenation.com/article/154165/doing-green-jobs-right?page=full |newspaper=The Nation |date=13 September 2010 |accessdate=9 June 2011}}
- In 2015, ACE partnered with [https://mapublichealth.org/ MPHA](Massachusetts Public Health Alliance) and facilitated the implementation of Boston's Diesel Emission Reduction Ordinance(DERO). DERO address air pollution by reducing emission from transportations and buildings, especially communities that have disproportionately suffered from air pollution.{{Cite web |title=Programs |url=https://ace-ej.org/what-we-do/programs/ |access-date=2025-02-06 |website=Alternatives for Community and Environment |language=en-US}}
- In 2023, ACE’s partnership with MPHA facilitated the implementation of [https://malegislature.gov/Bills/193/SD505 Energy Facilities Siting Reform bill], which ensures the impacts of air pollutions on environmental justice communities to be adequately addressed.{{Cite web |date=2023-01-15 |title=Environmental Justice |url=https://mapublichealth.org/environmental-justice/#:~:text=Residents%20of%20color%20at%20all,due%20to%20poor%20air%20quality. |access-date=2025-02-07 |website=Massachusetts Public Health Alliance |language=en-US}}
