Altigena is a genus of cyprinid freshwater fish found in the continental part of South East Asia. This genus was resurrected from Bangana by Maurice Kottelat in 2017.{{cite web |url=http://english.kiz.cas.cn/Research/rp/202104/t20210422_267400.html |publisher=Kunming Institute of Zoology |title=Scientists renew taxonomic revision of Altigena lippa and recover the validity of A. laticeps |date=22 April 2021|author=LIN Feng |author2=WANG Zhibang|name-list-style=and|editor=YANG Yingrun}}

The generic name was originally intended as a subgenus of Osteochilus by a Chinese author Lin, and describes the distinguishing feature, alluding to {{lang|la|altus}}, "high" and {{lang|el|γένυς}} (génys), "chin". As Lin did not designate a type species, authorship was granted to Burton, the editor of the Zoological Record.{{cite web | url = https://etyfish.org/labeoninae/ | title = Family CYPRINIDAE: Subfamily LABEONINAE Bleeker 1859 (Labeos) | access-date = 29 July 2024 | author1 = Christopher Scharpf | author2 = Kenneth J.
