Amara is a railway station in San Sebastián, Basque Country, Spain. It is owned by Euskal Trenbide Sarea and operated by Euskotren. It is the eastern terminus of the Bilbao-San Sebastián line and is also served by the suburban Topo service.
History
The station opened in 1895 as the eastern terminus of the San Sebastián-Elgoibar railway (which at the time only reached {{station|Zarautz}}).{{cite news |last1=Sada |first1=Javier |title=La estación de Amara |url=https://www.diariovasco.com/20090426/san-sebastian/estacion-amara-20090426.html |access-date=23 June 2022 |work=El Diario Vasco |date=26 April 2009 |language=es}} In 1912, the San Sebastián-Hendaye line opened, connecting with the existing narrow-gauge railway at Amara.{{cite web |last1=Olaizola |first1=Juanjo |author1-link=Juanjo Olaizola |title=El "Topo" cumple un siglo |url=http://historiastren.blogspot.com/2012/12/el-topo-cumple-un-siglo.html |website=Historias del tren |access-date=23 June 2022 |language=es |date=5 December 2012}}
Originally, the station wasn't the terminus for the San Sebastián-Hendaye railway. Instead, it reached the city center by running on the streets. Since 1942, the railway and the city council had been in disagreement over the street-running service, and the city loop closed in 1954.{{cite news |last1=Ruiz |first1=Txema |title=Combinación del Topo |url=https://www.diariovasco.com/20100202/pasaia-errenteria/combinacion-topo-20100202.html |access-date=23 June 2022 |work=El Diario Vasco |date=2 February 2010 |language=es}}
The original station was located to the north of the current one. It was a provisional building built in 1900, and starting in 1912 the substitution of the station was being considered.{{cite news |last1=Sada |first1=Javier |title=Adiós a la estación de Amara |url=https://www.diariovasco.com/gipuzkoa/memoria/adios-estacion-amara-20210503082910-ntvo_amp.html |access-date=23 June 2022 |work=El Diario Vasco |date=3 May 2021 |language=es}} Various projects were presented, but ultimately they weren't carried out.{{cite journal |last1=Muñoz Echebeguren |first1=Fermín |editor1-last=Tellechea Idígoras |editor1-first=J.
