Amblyornis is a genus of passerine birds belonging to the bowerbird family Ptilonorhynchidae. The species are endemic to the mountains of New Guinea.
Birds in this genus build "maypole-type" bowers in which vegetation is arranged around a central vertical sapling or tree-fern.{{ cite book | last1=Frith | first1=C.B. | last2=Frith | first2=D.W. | year=2009 | chapter=Family Ptilonorhynchidae (Bowerbirds) | editor1-last=del Hoyo | editor1-first=J. | editor2-last=Elliott | editor2-first=A. | editor3-last=Sargatal | editor3-first=J. | title=Handbook of the Birds of the World | volume=14: Bush-shrikes to Old World Sparrows | location=Barcelona, Spain | publisher=Lynx Edicions | isbn=978-84-96553-50-7 | pages=350-403 [366] | chapter-url=https://archive.org/details/handbookofbirdso0014unse/page/366/mode/1up | chapter-url-access=registration }}{{Cite journal | last1=Ericson | first1=P.G.P. | last2=Irestedt | first2=M. | last3=Nylander | first3=J.A.A. | last4=Christidis | first4=L. | last5=Joseph | first5=L. | last6=Qu | first6=Y. | date=2020 | title=Parallel evolution of bower-building behavior in two groups of bowerbirds suggested by phylogenomics | journal=Systematic Biology | volume=69 | issue=5 | pages=820-829 | doi=10.1093/sysbio/syaa040 | doi-access=free | pmc=7440736 }}
Taxonomy
The genus Amblyornis was introduced in 1872 by the American zoologist Daniel Giraud Elliot to accommodate a single species, Ptilorhynchus inornatus Schlegel, 1871, the Vogelkop bowerbird, which is the type species by monotypy.{{ cite journal | last=Elliot | first=Daniel Giraud | author-link=Daniel Giraud Elliot | date=1872 | title=Descriptions of two new genera of Paradiseidae, with remarks on some of the species | journal=Ibis | series=Series 3 | volume=2 | pages=111-114 [113] | url=https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/8618071 }}{{ cite book | editor1-last=Mayr | editor1-first=Ernst | editor1-link=Ernst Mayr | editor2-last=Greenway | editor2-first=James C.
