America's Cup Management

America's Cup Management (ACM) was a private company established to organize and oversee the 2007 America's Cup, the 32nd edition of the prestigious sailing competition. The company was formed by Ernesto Bertarelli, the principal of the Swiss syndicate Alinghi, following the team's victory in the 2003 America's Cup. As the Cup Defender, Alinghi was granted the authority to define the structure, rules, and logistics of the subsequent competition, a role traditionally held by the reigning champion.
ACM was responsible for a wide range of organizational tasks, including selecting the host city, setting the event dates, managing media and broadcasting rights, determining boat design specifications, and overseeing entry procedures. The 2007 America's Cup was hosted in Valencia, Spain, marking the first time the competition was held in Europe.
Although ACM operated under the authority of the Defender, the planning and rule-making processes were conducted in consultation with the Challenger of Record, which for the 2007 edition was the Golden Gate Yacht Club, represented by BMW Oracle Racing (United States).
Revenue Surplus and Distribution
On 5 July 2007, ACM announced that the event had generated a revenue surplus of approximately €60 million. In accordance with the competition protocol, the surplus was divided equally:
- 50% (€30 million) was retained by the Defender, Alinghi
- 50% (€30 million) was distributed among the 11 Challenger teams
The Challenger portion was allocated using a tiered formula, consistent with the protocols of the three previous editions of the Cup:
- 40% of the €30 million was distributed equally among all 11 Challengers
- 30% was divided among the four semi-finalist teams
- 20% was awarded to the two finalists
- 10% was granted to the winner of the Challenger Selection Series
