Amethyst is a fictional character from the animated television series Steven Universe, created by Rebecca Sugar. She is voiced by Michaela Dietz.

Based on the gemstone amethyst, she is a Gem, a fictional alien being that exists as a magical gemstone projecting a holographic body, and one of the four "Crystal Gems", a group of Gems who defend Earth.{{cite web |last1=Brown |first1=Tracy |title='Steven Universe' changed TV forever. Amethyst's look was redesigned between the pilot episode of Steven Universe and the first regular episode. Because of the characters' personalities, Amethyst's Gem is a sphere, while Garnet's Gem is square, and Pearl's Gem is a cone, with all of these designs also inspired by Bauhaus Theory.{{harvnb|McDonnell|2017|p=80}}{{cite web|last1=Whitbrook|first1=James|last2=Pulliam-Moore|first2=Charles|url=https://gizmodo.com/the-coolest-details-from-steven-universes-gorgeous-new-1797017304|title=The Coolest Details From Steven Universe's Gorgeous New Art Book|website=Gizmodo|date=July 19, 2017|access-date=October 19, 2021|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20211019172458/https://gizmodo.com/the-coolest-details-from-steven-universes-gorgeous-new-1797017304|archive-date=October 19, 2021|url-status=live}} In a July 2014 interview, Dietz said she was excited to have a panel on the show, to see "the fans of the show and hear their thoughts," and praised the show's cast and crew.{{cite news|last1=Sims |first1=Chris |title=No, You're The Joke: The Cast Of 'Steven Universe' At Comic-Con 2014 [Interview] |url=http://comicsalliance.com/steven-universe-cast-interview-comic-con-2014/ |date=July 30, 2014 |website=ComicsAlliance |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150718023154/http://comicsalliance.com/steven-universe-cast-interview-comic-con-2014/ |archive-date=July 18, 2015 }} In August 2014 interview, she noted that Amethyst was her "first experience voicing a cartoon character" and said that she was "having such a blast" voicing Amethyst.{{cite news|last1=Del Castillo|first1=Chris|title=SDCC 2014: Regular Show and Steven Universe cast and crew interviews|url=http://nerdreactor.com/2014/08/07/sdcc-2014-regular-show-and-steven-universe-cast-and-crew-interviews/|work=Nerd Reactor|date=August 7, 2014|url-status=live|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150323163029/http://nerdreactor.com/2014/08/07/sdcc-2014-regular-show-and-steven-universe-cast-and-crew-interviews/|archive-date=March 23, 2015}}

In a January 2016 interview with the show's composers, Aivi Tran and Steven "Surrashu" Velema, the latter who did music for Amethyst, it was noted that the instruments she plays are a representation of her personality, like other Gems in the series. As such, she is shown with "loose and wild" drums, [x] while Amethyst was represented in the show's music as an "eclectic drum kit, with electric bass and some...synths" and that when she fused with Pearl becoming Opal, both characters are "distinguishable in the music."{{cite interview |last=Tran |first=Aivi |last2=Velema |first2=Steven "Surrashu" |interviewer=Eric Thurm |title=Dropping Gems: An Interview with the Composers of the Score for 'Steven Universe' |work=Vice.com |date=January 15, 2016 |url=https://www.vice.com/en/article/steven-universe-composers-aivi-surrashu-interview/ |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210911213352/https://www.vice.com/en/article/rq4nzx/steven-universe-composers-aivi-surrashu-interview |archive-date=September 11, 2021 |access-date=October 19, 2021}} Reviewer Caroline Framke also described Amethyst's drums as "spastic."{{cite web |last=Framke |first=Caroline |title=How Steven Universe, a joyous cartoon about love and aliens, used music to evolve |work=Vox |date=June 2, 2017 |url=https://www.vox.com/culture/2017/6/1/15714096/steven-universe-soundtrack-rebecca-sugar-interview |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20211002144843/https://www.vox.com/culture/2017/6/1/15714096/steven-universe-soundtrack-rebecca-sugar-interview |archive-date=October 2, 2021 |access-date=October 19, 2021}}
