Reception

Reviewing the special in Paste, Garrett Martin described the topics of Schumer's special as similar to the stand-up clips in her television show Inside Amy Schumer, but "she’s matured as a comedian—she’s able to get bigger and better laughs with material that’s a little bit subtler than in the past."{{cite web|url=http://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2015/10/amy-schumer-live-at-the-apollo-review.html|title=Amy Schumer: Live at the Apollo Review|work=Paste|first=Garrett|last=Martin|date=October 16, 2015|accessdate=October 17, 2015}} In Slate, Willa Paskin said much of the special was "funny and scathing" but while "Schumer often makes fun of both herself and of gender standards, which can be a cannily self-deprecating way of skewering the status quo...sometimes [this] just seems like an inadvertent upholding of it."{{cite news|last1=Paskin|first1=Willa|title=Amy Schumer's HBO Special Live at the Apollo Was Funny—but Frustrating|url=http://www.slate.com/blogs/browbeat/2015/10/19/amy_schumer_live_at_the_apollo_reviewed_why_the_hbo_special_was_frustrating.html|accessdate=4 April 2017|work=Slate|date=19 October 2015}}
