Anagallis is a formerly recognized genus of flowering plants in the family Primulaceae. It had about 20–25 species, commonly called pimpernels. Molecular phylogenetic studies showed that Anagallis was embedded in the genus Lysimachia, so its species were transferred to that genus. The scarlet pimpernel referred to in literature was part of this genus.
Taxonomy
The genus name Anagallis is from the Greek {{transliteration|grc|ana}} ({{lang|grc|ἀνα-}} 'again') and {{transliteration|grc|agállein}} ({{lang|grc|ἀγάλλειν}} 'to delight in'), and it refers to the opening and closing of the flowers in response to environmental conditions.{{citation needed|date=March 2025}}
Molecular phylogenetic studies have shown that as then circumscribed neither Anagallis nor the related genus Lysimachia were monophyletic.{{cite journal| author = Ulrika Manns and Arne A. Anderberg| year = 2005| title = Molecular Phylogeny of Anagallis (Primulaceae) Based on ITS, trnL-F, and ndhF Sequence Data| journal = International Journal of Plant Sciences|volume= 166|pages = 1019–1028| doi = 10.1086/449318| issue = 6}}{{Cite journal |last1=Manns |first1=U. |last2=Anderberg |first2=A.A. |date=2009 |title=New combinations and names in Lysimachia (Myrsinaceae) for species of Anagallis, Pelletiera and Trientalis |journal=Willdenowia |volume=39 |issue=1 |pages=49–54 |doi=10.3372/wi.39.39103 |bibcode=2009Willd..39...49M |name-list-style=amp }} Accordingly in 2009, it was proposed to merge Anagallis (together with two other small genera) into Lysimachia. Names in that genus were published for all Anagallis species. {{As of|2025|March}}, the merger was accepted by Plants of the World Online,{{Cite POWO|title=Anagallis L..|id=329605-2|access-date=2025-03-10|mode=cs1}} among other taxonomic databases.
