History

The series forms part of the ICC Future Tours Programme. The gap between tours may vary depending on scheduling. To claim the Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy, a team must win the series; if the series is drawn, the side holding the trophy from the previous series retains it.{{cite web |url=https://www.espn.co.uk/cricket/story/_/id/45527989/india-series-commercially-important-ashes-says-ecb-chief-executive |title=India series as commercially important as The Ashes says ECB chief executive |publisher=ESPN |accessdate=2025-06-23}}

The Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy replaced the Pataudi Trophy, which was contested for series played in England between 2007 and 2025.{{cite news |title=Sachin Tendulkar on renaming India-England trophy: Pataudi legacy must be kept alive |url=https://www.indiatoday.in/sports/cricket/story/sachin-tendulkar-pataudi-trophy-india-england-series-test-2743132-2025-06-19 |access-date=21 June 2025 |publisher=India Today |date=19 June 2025 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20250621124458/https://www.indiatoday.in/sports/cricket/story/sachin-tendulkar-pataudi-trophy-india-england-series-test-2743132-2025-06-19 |archive-date=21 June 2025 |language=en}} To continue to honour the legacy of the Nawab of Pataudi, the winning captain of the trophy would be presented the Pataudi medal, an idea by Sachin Tendulkar.{{cite news |title='Wanted to keep Pataudi legacy alive' - how Tendulkar helped in creating Pataudi medal |url=https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/sachin-tendulkar-helped-create-pataudi-medal-for-winning-captain-of-india-vs-england-test-series-1490913 |access-date=21 June 2025 |publisher=ESPNcricinfo |date=19 June 2025 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20250621124613/https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/sachin-tendulkar-helped-create-pataudi-medal-for-winning-captain-of-india-vs-england-test-series-1490913 |archive-date=21 June 2025 |language=en}}{{cite news |title=Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy unveiled for England-India Tests |url=https://www.icc-cricket.com/news/anderson-tendulkar-trophy-unveiled-for-england-india-tests |access-date=21 June 2025 |work= |publisher=ICC |date=19 June 2025 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20250621124102/https://www.icc-cricket.com/news/anderson-tendulkar-trophy-unveiled-for-england-india-tests |archive-date=21 June 2025 |language=en}}{{cite news |title=New Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy unveiled ahead of India vs England series |url=https://indianexpress.com/article/sports/cricket/anderson-tendulkar-trophy-unveiled-india-vs-england-series-10076307/ |access-date=21 June 2025 |publisher=The Indian Express |date=19 June 2025 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20250621124219/https://indianexpress.com/article/sports/cricket/anderson-tendulkar-trophy-unveiled-india-vs-england-series-10076307/ |archive-date=21 June 2025 |language=en}}

Shortly after the reveal, the former Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar criticised the naming of the trophy, stating he believed that Tendulkar's name should have come first and encouraged Indian fans to deliberately misname it when mentioning it.{{cite web |url=https://www.telegraph.co.uk/cricket/2025/06/22/sunil-gavaskar-anderson-tendulkar-trophy-england-india/ |title=India legend says names wrong way round on Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy |work=The Telegraph |url-access=subscription |date=2025-06-23 |accessdate=2025-06-23 |first=Will |last=MacPhearson}} This was despite the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) stating that the trophy was named solely on alphabetical order.{{cite web |url=https://www.hindustantimes.com/cricket/sunil-gavaskar-roughs-up-lame-ecb-for-putting-andersons-name-ahead-of-tendulkar-his-record-nowhere-close-to-sachin-101750587898564.html |title=Sunil Gavaskar roughs up 'lame' ECB for putting Anderson's name ahead of Tendulkar. |work=Hindustan Times |accessdate=2025-06-23 |date=2025-06-23}}
