Research
Baccarelli's research has pioneered the field of public health epigenetics, which explores how environmental factors can modify gene expression without changing the DNA sequence.{{Cite web |last=Kirkpatrick |first=Bailey |date=2016-07-28 |title=3 Pioneering Epigenetic Labs: Exploring the People and Discoveries that Transcend the Lab Walls |url=http://www.whatisepigenetics.com/3-pioneering-epigenetic-labs-exploring-the-people-and-discoveries-that-transcend-the-lab-walls/ |access-date=2023-06-22 |website=What is Epigenetics? |language=en}} His studies have demonstrated that air pollution can alter the epigenome, leading to changes in gene regulation that may contribute to the development of diseases such as cardiovascular disorders and neurodegenerative conditions.{{Cite web |last=Kirkpatrick |first=Bailey |date=2017-05-30 |title=B Vitamins Protect Against Harmful Epigenetic Effects of Air Pollution |url=http://www.whatisepigenetics.com/b-vitamins-protect-harmful-epigenetic-effects-air-pollution/ |access-date=2023-06-22 |website=What is Epigenetics? |language=en}}{{Cite web |title=How our environment is making us sick – and what we can do about it |url=https://www.newscientist.com/article/mg25333710-800-how-our-environment-is-making-us-sick-and-what-we-can-do-about-it/ |access-date=2023-06-22 |website=New Scientist |language=en-US}}
Baccarelli conducted research showing that short-term exposure to air pollution, including levels considered "acceptable," can impair cognitive ability in the elderly.{{Cite news |last=Bakalar |first=Nicholas |date=2021-05-17 |title=Air Pollution Takes a Toll on the Brain |language=en-US |work=The New York Times |url=https://www.nytimes.com/2021/05/17/well/mind/pollution-brain-aspirin.html |access-date=2023-06-22 |issn=0362-4331}}{{Cite web |date=2021-05-04 |title=Short-term exposure to air pollution may impede cognition, Aspirin could help: Study |url=https://in.style.yahoo.com/short-term-exposure-air-pollution-025326643.html |access-date=2023-06-22 |website=in.style.yahoo.com |language=en-CA}}{{Cite news |last1=Sample |first1=Ian |date=2021-05-03 |title=Air pollution spikes may impair older men's thinking, study finds |language=en-GB |work=The Guardian |url=https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/may/03/air-pollution-spikes-may-impair-older-mens-thinking-study-finds |access-date=2023-06-22 |issn=0261-3077}} Baccarelli also found that the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin partially protected against the negative cognitive effects of pollution.{{Cite news |last1=Sample |first1=Ian |date=2021-05-03 |title=Air pollution spikes may impair older men's thinking, study finds |language=en-GB |work=The Guardian |url=https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/may/03/air-pollution-spikes-may-impair-older-mens-thinking-study-finds |access-date=2023-06-22 |issn=0261-3077}} He also conducted research showing that ambient air pollution is associated with an increased risk of osteoporosis and bone fractures in older individuals.{{Cite web |title=Does air pollution affect osteoporosis?
