Andrea Malchiodi (born September 30, 1972) is an Italian mathematician who is active in the fields of partial differential equations and calculus of variations, with several contributions to geometric analysis.

Scientific activity

Malchiodi received his Ph.D. in mathematics from the International School for Advanced Studies in 2000 under the supervision of Antonio Ambrosetti.{{Citation needed|date=December 2019}} He is a professor of mathematics at the Scuola Normale Superiore at Pisa. He was previously professor of mathematics at the International School for Advanced Studies and at the University of Warwick.{{Citation needed|date=December 2019}} Malchiodi has developed topological and analytical methods allowing to deal with a number of questions in geometric analysis, such as the Yamabe problem, the scalar curvature problem, problems coming from fourth order conformal geometry and concentration for singular perturbation problems.{{cite web|title=Caccioppoli prize citation|url=http://umi.dm.unibo.it/caccioppoli/vincitori-en.html#2006|publisher=Italian Mathematical Union|accessdate=May 5, 2013|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20171011071928/http://umi.dm.unibo.it/caccioppoli/vincitori-en.html#2006|archive-date=October 11, 2017|url-status=dead}}{{cite web|title=Existence of conformal metrics with constant Q-curvature|url=http://annals.math.princeton.edu/2008/168-3/p03|publisher=Annals of Mathematics|accessdate=June 12, 2013}}{{cite journal|title=Q-curvature flow on S4|journal=Journal of Differential Geometry|volume=73|pages=1–44|url=http://projecteuclid.org/DPubS?service=UI&version=1.0&verb=Display&handle=euclid.jdg/1146680511|accessdate=June 12, 2013|doi=10.4310/jdg/1146680511|year=2006|last1=Malchiodi|first1=Andrea|last2=Struwe|first2=Michael|doi-access=free}} In particular, he proved some new intricate forms of improved Moser-Trudinger inequalities allowing to prove existence results for singular Liouville equations.{{cite journal|title=New Improved Moser–Trudinger Inequalities and Singular Liouville Equations on Compact Surfaces|journal=Geometric and Functional Analysis|volume=21|issue=5|pages=1196–1217|doi=10.1007/s00039-011-0134-7|year=2011|last1=Malchiodi|first1=Andrea|last2=Ruiz|first2=David|arxiv=1007.3861|s2cid=119317846 }} Similar types of inequalities allow to prove existence results for Toda systems on surfaces.{{cite journal|title=A Variational Analysis of the Toda System on Compact Surfaces|journal=Communications on Pure and Applied Mathematics|volume=66|issue=3|pages=332–371|doi=10.1002/cpa.21433|year=2013|last1=Malchiodi|first1=Andrea|last2=Ruiz|first2=David|arxiv=1105.3701|s2cid=119633018 }} Malchiodi has been visiting professor in many universities and institutions, amongst which are Stanford University, The Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, and ETH at Zurich.{{Citation needed|date=December 2019}} He belongs to the editorial board of several mathematical journals and is one of the managing editors of the journal Calculus of Variations & PDE.{{cite web|title=Calculus of Variations & PDE|url=https://www.springer.com/mathematics/analysis/journal/526|accessdate=January 19, 2014}}
