The museum has a unique art collection, dioramas and exhibits but also brings the visitor closer to understanding the background against which the war took place.{{cite web|url=http://www.dac.gov.za/publications/Guide/Free%20State/The%20War%20Museum.pdf |title=The War Museum of the Boer Republics |publisher=Department of Arts and Culture |accessdate=2013-06-03 }}{{dead link|date=July 2017 |bot=InternetArchiveBot |fix-attempted=yes }} The National Women's Monument dedicated to all women and children is situated at the same location and was unveiled in 1913.
