"Angry" is a song by British rock band the Rolling Stones, which serves as the lead single from their studio album Hackney Diamonds. Released on 6 September 2023, it is the first new original music from the band in three years (following the non-album single "Living in a Ghost Town" in 2020), whilst Hackney Diamonds is their first album of new original music in 18 years (following A Bigger Bang in 2005).{{Cite web|url=https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/the-rolling-stones-hackney-diamonds/|title=The Rolling Stones: Hackney Diamonds|website=Pitchfork.com|access-date=23 October 2023}}

Release and promotion

On 2 September 2023 – following a couple weeks of cryptic online teasers for the new album – the band previewed a short snippet of "Angry" on the website dontgetangrywithme.com, which experienced instability and frequent errors that some interpreted as being intentional.{{Cite news |last=Weaver |first=Matthew |date=2023-08-23 |title=The Rolling Stones sneak cryptic teaser ad for new album in local London newspaper |language=en-GB |newspaper=The Guardian |url=https://www.theguardian.com/music/2023/aug/23/the-rolling-stones-sneak-cryptic-teaser-ad-for-new-album-in-local-london-newspaper-hackney-diamonds |access-date=2023-09-06 |issn=0261-3077}}{{Cite web |last=DiVita |first=Joe |date=2023-09-05 |title=Are The Rolling Stones Intentionally Making Fans Angry With Song Teaser on New Website? |url=https://loudwire.com/rolling-stones-hackney-diamonds-album-dont-get-angry-with-me-teaser-website/ |access-date=2023-09-06 |website=Loudwire |language=en}} On 4 September, the album was officially announced, as were the plans for a livestream with television host Jimmy Fallon where more information would be revealed and the lead single would be premiered.{{Cite magazine |last=Klee |first=Miles |date=2023-09-04 |title=Rolling Stones Confirm Hackney Diamonds, First Studio Album in Nearly Two Decades |url=https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/rolling-stones-hackney-diamonds-new-album-mick-jagger-jimmy-fallon-1234818000/ |access-date=2023-09-06 |magazine=Rolling Stone |language=en-US|url-access=limited}} On 6 September, the livestream was broadcast on the Rolling Stones' official YouTube channel while being filmed at the Hackney Empire Theatre in London.{{Cite AV media |publisher=The Rolling Stones|type=Livestream|date=6 September 2023|title=Rolling Stones Live in conversation with Jimmy Fallon |url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSzJhzfDtS4 |access-date=2023-09-06 |language=en-GB|location=Hackney, London}} Fallon interviewed the band, who revealed the album's track list and release date and also answered various questions sent in from fans.

Music video

The music video for "Angry" premiered on September 6, at The Rolling Stones' official YouTube channel, accompanying their promotional interview with Jimmy Fallon. The video features actress Sydney Sweeney, dressed in black studded chaps and dancing in the back seat of a red Mercedes 560 SL convertible as it is driven down the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles while the band members sing to her from large billboards that the car passes.{{Cite magazine |last=Grow |first=Kory |date=2023-09-11 |title=Singing Billboards and Sydney Sweeney: Inside the Rolling Stones' 'Angry' Video |url=https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/rolling-stones-angry-video-sydney-sweeney-behind-scenes-1234822102/ |access-date=2024-09-29 |magazine=Rolling Stone |language=en}}{{Cite web |last=Sharf |first=Zack |date=2023-12-21 |title=Sydney Sweeney Rejects Claim She Was 'Objectified' in Rolling Stones Music Video: 'I Find Empowerment Through Embracing' My Body |url=https://variety.com/2023/music/news/sydney-sweeney-rolling-stones-music-video-sexualized-objectified-1235848678/ |access-date=2023-12-26 |website=Variety |language=en-US}}{{Cite news|url=https://abcnews.go.com/GMA/Culture/rolling-stones-drop-music-video-angry-sydney-sweeney/story?id=102961364|title=The Rolling Stones drop music video for 'Angry' starring Sydney Sweeney|first=Carson |last=Blackwelder|date=6 September 2023|access-date=6 September 2023|work=ABC News}} The video was met with criticism that it objectified Sweeney, but she defended it as "empowerment through embracing [my] body". This song is included in the soundtrack for EA Sports FC 24.

Reception

"Angry" was met with primarily positive reviews. A review from The Telegraph rated the song 5 out of 5 stars, calling it the band's "best single in four decades, an absolute blast [with] extravagant, leering defiance"; describing the riff as "defiantly dumb", the guitar solo as "gnarly", and the overall style as "unapologetically old-fashioned".{{Cite news |last=McCormick |first=Neil |author-link=Neil McCormick |date=2023-09-06 |title=Angry is The Rolling Stones' best single in 40 years |language=en-GB |newspaper=The Telegraph |url=https://www.telegraph.co.uk/music/artists/rolling-stones-angry-review-hackney-diamonds-sydney-sweeney/ |access-date=2023-09-06 |issn=0307-1235}} Another 5-star review from the newspaper I shares this positive sentiment, characterizing the song as "rollicking, rip-roaring rock 'n' roll" with a "characteristically big, confident guitar riff [and] catchy refrain" that are "[imbued with] feeling and life".{{Cite news |last=Bootle |first=Emily |date=2023-09-06 |title=Angry is the Rolling Stones' best song in decades |url=https://inews.co.uk/culture/rolling-stones-angry-review-best-song-decades-2597801 |access-date=2023-09-07 |newspaper=I |language=en}} A 4-star review from The Guardian also echoes this praise, citing the band's ability to "cleverly wax and wane from minor to major chords, carrying [a] tale of alternating desperation and resignation" while also making the track "a complete hoot [that] suggests fun, freedom, and creative hunger".{{Cite news |last=Beaumont-Thomas |first=Ben |date=2023-09-06 |title=The Rolling Stones: Angry review – Jagger's a hoot in strutting, barnstorming return |language=en-GB |newspaper=The Guardian |url=https://www.theguardian.com/music/2023/sep/06/rolling-stones-angry-review-jaggers-a-hoot-in-strutting-barnstorming-return |access-date=2023-09-07 |issn=0261-3077}} Alternatively, a review from Far Out offered a dissenting opinion and rated the song 2.5 out of 5 stars, criticizing the song as "distinctly average" and "Stones-by-numbers", further stating that it makes use of "the same borrowed and rather tired blues riff" and that it "aims to thrill but merely titillates".{{Cite web |date=2023-09-06 |title=The Rolling Stones roll back the years with 'Angry' |url=https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/the-rolling-stones-roll-back-the-years-with-angry-but-should-they/ |access-date=2023-09-07 |website=faroutmagazine.co.uk |language=en-US}}
