The earliest form of the given name Angus, and its cognates, occurs in Adomnán's Vita Columbae (English: "Life of Columba{{-"}}) as Oinogusius, Oinogussius. This name likely refers to a Pictish king whose name is recorded variously as Onnust, Hungus.

According to historian Alex Woolf, the early Gaelic form of the name, Oengus, was borrowed from the Pictish Onuist, which appears in British as Ungust. Woolf noted that these names are all derived from the Celtic *Oinogustos.{{Cite book |last=Woolf |first=Alex |author-link=Alex Woolf |title=From Pictland to Alba, 789–1070 |year=2007 |publisher=Edinburgh University Press |location=Edinburgh |isbn=978-0-7486-1233-8 |pages=xiv, 330 }} Linguist John Kneen derived this name from two Celtic elements the following way: *Oino-gustos, meaning "one-choice".{{cite web |url=http://www.isle-of-man.com/manxnotebook/fulltext/pn1937/p001.htm |title=Christian Names |publisher=www.isle-of-man.com |access-date=1 October 2010 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20100818054621/http://www.isle-of-man.com/manxnotebook/fulltext/pn1937/p001.htm |archive-date=18 August 2010 |url-status=live}} Which is a transcription of {{cite book |last=Kneen |first=J.
