Angus John Bateman (1919–1996) was an English geneticist. He is most notable for his 1948 study{{Cite journal|last=Bateman|first=Angus J.|date=1948|title=Intra-Sexual Selection in Drosophila|journal=Journal of Heredity|volume=2|issue=Pt. 3|pages=349–68|doi=10.1038/hdy.1948.21|pmid=18103134|doi-access=free|bibcode=1948Hered...2..349B }} of evolutionary effects of sexual selection in fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) which established Bateman's principle, where in the evolutionary biology of most species, variability in reproductive success,, (or reproductive variance), is greater in males than in females.
Bateman was a member of the Communist Party of Great Britain during the Lysenko affair. He was an anti-Lysenkoist within the Party whilst writing in defense of Lysenko for non-Party audiences.{{Cite journal|last=Paul|first=Diane|date=1983|title=A War on Two Fronts: J. B. S. Haldane and the Response to Lysenkoism in Britain|journal=Journal of the History of Biology|volume=16|issue=1|pages=1–37|jstor=4330841|doi=10.1007/BF00186674|pmid=11611245|s2cid=29713118 }}
Career
Bateman received his B.Sc from King's College London in 1940, and later received his Ph.D. and D.Sc. from the same institution. In 1942 he moved to Cyril Darlington's Genetics Department at the John Innes Horticultural Institute in Merton Park.[https://web.archive.org/web/20111115214604/http://icb.oxfordjournals.org/content/45/5/831.full The Darwin-Bateman Paradigm in Historical Context]{{Cite book|title=Looking for a few good males : female choice in evolutionary biology|last=Milam, Erika Lorraine, 1974-|date=2010|publisher=Johns Hopkins University Press|isbn=978-0-8018-9817-4|location=Baltimore|oclc=607552555}}{{Cite web|url=https://www.yumpu.com/en/document/read/23666544/1910s-timeline-john-innes-centre|title=1910s Timeline - John Innes Centre|last=Yumpu.com|website=yumpu.com|language=en|access-date=2020-01-30}} Bateman was an acquaintance of Ronald Fisher and critically discussed the manuscript of his 1948 paper with him.
Bateman later moved to the Paterson Institute in Manchester and worked on mutagenicity.{{Cite journal|last=Bateman|first=A.
