Silva Manso was born in Campinas, Brazil.{{cite web|url=http://plants.jstor.org/person/bm000007827|title=Silva Manso, António Luiz Patricio da (1788-1848)|publisher=JSTOR|accessdate=September 22, 2013}} Silva Manso was an expert on spermatophytes{{cite web|url=http://kiki.huh.harvard.edu/databases/botanist_search.php?mode=details&id=1919|publisher=Harvard University Herbarium|title=Index of Botanists: Silva Manso, Antonio Luiz Patricio da|accessdate=September 22, 2013}} and the first person to classify the genus Cayaponia and the species Cayaponia espelina. He began studying botany in 1819 and became a licensed physician in 1820. He was also a member of the Brazilian General Assembly from 1834 to 1837.
