Anthony Storr (18 May 1920 – 17 March 2001) was an English psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, and author.

Background and education

Born in London, Storr was educated at Winchester College, Christ's College, Cambridge, and Westminster Hospital. He was in the first cohort of medics to train in Jungian analysis at the Society of Analytical Psychology in London.{{cite book|title=Freud, Jung, Klein-- the Fenceless Field: Essays on Psychoanalysis and Analytical Psychology |last=Fordham |first=Michael |editor-last=Hobdell |editor-first=Roger |publisher=Routledge |location=London |year=1998 |isbn=978-0-415186155}}

Career

In 1974, Storr moved from private practice to a teaching appointment at the Warneford Hospital in Oxford, until his retirement in 1984.{{cite web |last=Stevens |first=Anthony |url=https://www.theguardian.com/news/2001/mar/20/guardianobituaries.highereducation |title=Obituary: Anthony Storr |website=The Guardian |date=20 March 2001 |access-date=2020-07-30}}

Personal

Storr was, as one of his obituarists observed, "no stranger to suffering at formative stages of his life." He married twice, to Catherine Cole (who became a children's writer under her married name) in 1942 and writer Catherine Peters in 1970 after the first marriage ended in divorce.{{cite web |url=https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/obituaries/1327262/Anthony-Storr.html |title=Obituary: Anthony Storr |website=The Telegraph |date=21 March 2001 |access-date=2020-07-29}}

Distinctions

Works

In his books, Storr explored the secrets of the dark sides of the human psyche – sexual deviations (Sexual Deviation, 1964), aggression (Human Aggression, 1968), and destructiveness (Human Destructiveness, 1972). At the same time, he saw the possibility of creative use of these spontaneous drives and directing them towards sports, scientific and artistic feats (The Dynamics of Creation, 1972).{{cite journal |last=Stevens |first=Anthony |title=Obituary: Anthony Storr |journal=BJPsych Bulletin |volume=25 |issue=9 |date=September 2001 |pages=365–366 |doi=10.1192/pb.25.9.365 |issn=2056-4694|doi-access=free }}

In his book Music and the Mind, Storr explores various theories on the origins of music.{{Cite web|title=MUSIC AND THE MIND- "Review"| url=https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/anthony-storr/music-and-the-mind/ |website=Kirkus Reviews| access-date=7 December 2021}}

In chapter 3 of the book Storr writes:

Although music is sometimes referred to as a universal language, this is an entirely misleading description. The difficulty of appreciating music from different periods of history or from different cultures is a powerful argument in favour of the view that the various types of music are predominantly cultural artefacts rather than based on natural phenomena.{{cite book |title=Music and the mind |year=1992 |first=Anthony |last=Storr |author-link=Anthony Storr |publisher=Ballantine Books |page=50 |isbn=000215398X}}

In his final book Feet of Clay; Saints, Sinners, and Madmen: The Power and Charisma of Gurus (1996) Storr tracks typical patterns, often involving psychotic disorders that shape the development of the guru.{{Cite web |url=https://www.storytel.com/sg/en/books/607352-Feet-Of-Clay-The-Power-and-Charisma-of-Gurus |title=Feet Of Clay: The Power and Charisma of Gurus |website=Storytel |date=2015-05-19 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20221227181000/https://www.storytel.com/sg/en/books/feet-of-clay-the-power-and-charisma-of-gurus-303409 |archive-date=2022-12-27}} He challenges Jesus' mental health by implying that there are psychological similarities between crazy "messiahs" such as Jim Jones, David Koresh, and respected religious leaders, including Jesus. His study is an attempt to look at Jesus as one of many gurus.{{cite book |last=Storr |first=Anthony |title=Feet of Clay; Saints, Sinners, and Madmen: A Study of Gurus |publisher=Free Press Paperbacks |location=New York |year=1997 |pages=[https://archive.org/details/feetofclaysaints0000stor/page/139 139]–140 |isbn=0-684-83495-2 |url-access=registration|url=https://archive.org/details/feetofclaysaints0000stor }}
