Behaviours

Anti-fandoms appear in many forms from hate-watching to snark.{{cite web|url=https://nyupress.org/9781479851041/anti-fandom/|title=Anti-Fandom: Dislike and Hate in the Digital Age|work=NYU Press|access-date=January 24, 2021|archive-date=July 16, 2023|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230716031637/https://nyupress.org/9781479851041/anti-fandom/|url-status=live}}

It is common for large anti-fandoms to gather in groups, usually on forums and sites, to share their mutual aversion. These are coined anti-fan clubs and some are substantial enough to become anti-fan sites.{{cite book|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=sfTiBAAAQBAJ&dq=%22Anti-fan%22+sites&pg=PA54|title=The Ashgate Research Companion to Fan Cultures|date=28 September 2014|publisher=Ashgate Publishing|isbn=9781409455622|editor1=Dr Stijn Reijnders|editor2=Dr Koos Zwaan|editor3=Dr Linda Duits|via=Google Books|access-date=January 25, 2022}}

Behaviours of some anti-fans include doxing, stalking, spreading rumours, stealing their personal belongings or information, abuse or physical harassment.{{cite web|url=https://www.allkpop.com/article/2015/07/10-chilling-instances-of-anti-fans-attacks|title=10 chilling instances of anti-fans' attacks|work=Allkpop|date=July 7, 2015|access-date=September 21, 2017|archive-date=June 21, 2023|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230621003823/https://www.allkpop.com/article/2015/07/10-chilling-instances-of-anti-fans-attacks|url-status=live}}

Criteria

There is a saying that "haters attract haters", which suggests that individuals who express negativity or hostility may draw similar reactions from others. This idea is rooted in the concept of reciprocity, where negative energy or behavior can be mirrored and reciprocated by those who encounter it. These haters are often found in negative communities and thrive off of their own negativity.{{Citation needed|date=October 2024}}

Anti-fan studies include a focus on specific communities of practice and their relationship to the media texts and fans actively marginalizing or discrediting other fans solely on basis of identity (sex, race, etc.).{{cite book|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=f1ZxDwAAQBAJ&dq=%22Anti-fan%22&pg=PA93|title=Fake Geek Girls: Fandom, Gender, and the Convergence Culture Industry|author=Suzanne Scott|date=16 April 2019|publisher=NYU Press|isbn=9781479879571|via=Google Books|access-date=January 25, 2022|archive-date=May 26, 2024|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240526000459/https://books.google.com/books?id=f1ZxDwAAQBAJ&dq=%22Anti-fan%22&pg=PA93#v=onepage&q=%22Anti-fan%22&f=false|url-status=live}}
