Aphodius is a genus of beetles in the family Scarabaeidae. In most species both the adults and larvae are coprophagous (dung feeding){{Cite journal|author=Valiela, Ivan|year=1974|title=Composition, food webs, and population limitation in dung arthropod communities during invasion and succession |journal=American Midland Naturalist|volume=92|pages=370–385 [380] |doi=10.2307/2424302 |jstor=2424302}} although some species have herbivorous or saprophagous larvae.Hanski and Cambefort (1991), p. 83. Aphodius species typically dominate dung beetle communities in north temperate ecosystems.Hanski and Cambefort (1991), p. 75. Most species are functionally classified as endocoprids, also known as dwellers, because the larvae live and feed within the dung pat itself.{{Cite journal | doi = 10.1046/j.1365-2311.2002.00487.x| title = A review of competition in north temperate dung beetle communities| journal = Ecological Entomology| volume = 28| issue = 1| pages = 1–13| year = 2003| last1 = Finn| first1 = J. With a discovery of an earlier published version by Hellwig, the correct citation for this genus is now: Aphodius Hellwig, 1798 (p. 101; 24 January). Type species by subsequent designation by Latreille (1810): Scarabaeus fimetarius Linnaeus, 1758.ALONSO-ZARAZAGA, M.A. & KRELL, F.T. 2011.
