He was also the publisher of the first 25 issues and founded simultaneously the "Apollo Poet Society"{{citation|surname1=J. Abu Shadi was not only a poet and author of numerous papers on politics, social reform, Islam and art but also a translator of some works by Hafez, Omar Khayyam and Shakespeare.{{citation|author=Robin Ostle|periodical=Bulletin of the School of Oriental and African Studies|title=Modern Egyptian Renaissance Man|year=1994|volume=57|issue=1|pages=184–192|language=de|doi=10.1017/s0041977x00028226}} His journal became an important medium for experimental Arabic poetry outside of Egypt and was considered to be a pioneer of modern Arabic literature.{{citation|author=Salma Khadra Jayyusi|title=Trends and movements in modern Arabic poetry|publisher=Brill|publication-place=London|page=370|language=de}}
After working as a publisher he went to the University of Alexandria to teach medicine and finally emigrated to New York in 1946.
