In 2006, Stewart joined English club Coventry and had his time at the club cut short when he tested positive for ephedrine, receiving a two-year ban by the International Rugby Board, later reduced to 18-months. He has claimed that the positive test was the result of a training supplement he had taken.{{cite news |last1=Wilkinson |first1=John |title=Rugby star's two-year ban for drug use |url=https://www.coventrytelegraph.net/news/coventry-news/rugby-stars-two-year-ban-drug-3119166 |work=Coventry Live |date=2 November 2006 |language=en}}{{cite news |last1=Robson |first1=Toby |title=Dual jobs for Wellington fullback Apoua Stewart |url=https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/4065972/Dual-jobs-for-Wellington-fullback-Apoua-Stewart |work=The Dominion Post |publisher=Stuff.co.nz |date=27 August 2010}}
