The Aqsa Mosque ({{langx|nl|Mescidi Aksamoskee}}) is a mosque, located on the Wagenstraat, in the city of The Hague, in the Netherlands. The building was originally built as a synagogue.
Overview
The Neoclassical building on the Wagenstraat opened in 1844, serving the Ashkenazi Jews of the city. It was expanded in 1922 and damaged by fire in 1944.{{cite web |title=Wagenstraat Synagogue in Den Haag |url=https://religiana.com/wagenstraat-synagogue-den-haag |work=Religiana |access-date=3 May 2023}} Around 80% of the city's Jews were killed in the Holocaust, while the synagogues were plundered.{{cite web |title=The Hague, Netherlands |url=https://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/history-of-jews-in-the-hague |work=Jewish Virtual Library |access-date=3 May 2023}}
In 1976 the Jewish community sold the building to the city on condition that it never be converted into a church. The city's Turkish Muslim community began using it without permission during Ramadan 1979 due to safety concerns over their previous mosque.{{cite news |title=Moslems Want to Retain Synagogue |url=https://www.jta.org/archive/moslems-want-to-retain-synagogue |access-date=3 May 2023 |work=Jewish Telegraphic Agency |date=3 August 1979}} The Turkish community took legal ownership of the building in 1981.{{cite web |title=The Hague |url=https://jck.nl/en/page/hague |work=Jewish Cultural Quarter |access-date=3 May 2023}} The Jewish community moved into a converted former Protestant church, which has since been mostly repurposed as apartments.{{cite web |title=The Hague |url=https://jguideeurope.org/en/region/the-netherlands/the-hague/ |work=JGuide Europe |access-date=3 May 2023}}
The building is a Rijksmonument with the number 459778, inscribed 19 October 1993.{{cite web |title=Synagoge, Wagenstraat 103, 2512 AS te 's-Gravenhage |url=https://monumentenregister.cultureelerfgoed.nl/monumenten/459778 |publisher=Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed |access-date=3 May 2023 |language=Dutch}}
