Arctoceras is a genus of ceratitid ammonoids from the Lower Triassic with a moderately narrow discoidal shell and ceratitic suture.Arkell et al 1957, Mesozoic Ammonoidea, Treatise on Invertebrate Paleontology Part L, R.C. Moore (ed), p L142 -L145
Appearance
Classification
Arctoceras was named by Alpheus Hyatt in 1900. The genotype Arctoceras polaris (Mojsisovics, 1865) was described from the Smithian (Early Triassic) of Spitsbergen (Svalbard). Up to seven species were described from the Vikinghøgda Formation of Spitsbergen, though a restudy concluded that only one species, Arctoceras blomstrandi, is valid, with A. blomstrandi var. costatus representing a morphologically divergent end member of the lineage.{{cite journal |last1=Hansen |first1=Bitten Bolvig |last2=Bucher |first2=Hugo |last3=Schneebeli-Hermann |first3=Elke |last4=Hammer |first4=Øyvind |title=The middle Smithian (Early Triassic) ammonoid Arctoceras blomstrandi: conch morphology and ornamentation in relation to stratigraphy |year=2021 |journal=Papers in Palaeontology |volume=7 |issue=3 |pages=1435–1457 |doi=10.1002/spp2.1348 |bibcode=2021PPal....7.1435H |doi-access=free|url=https://www.zora.uzh.ch/id/eprint/194357/1/Bolvig_Hansen_et_al_2020_Arcto-2.pdf }}
Arctoceras is the type genus of the Arctoceratidae which is a family in the Meekocerataceae, a superfamily within the order Ceratitida.[https://paleobiodb.org/classic/checkTaxonInfo?taxon_no=14032 Paleobiology Database -Arctoceras] 12/10/09 Ceratitids are ammonoid cephalopods, mostly from the Triassic but with ancestral forms in the upper Permian. Meekocerataceae sometimes appears as Meekoceratoidea to conform with a recent ruling of the ICZN regarding superfamily endings.
