Disability classifications
{{main article|Disability sport classification}}
Every participant at the Paralympics has their disability grouped into one of five disability categories; amputation, the condition may be congenital or sustained through injury or illness; cerebral palsy; wheelchair athletes, there is often overlap between this and other categories; visual impairment, including blindness; Les autres, any physical disability that does not fall strictly under one of the other categories, for example dwarfism or multiple sclerosis.{{cite web |title=Paralympics categories explained |publisher=ABC |date=3 September 2008 |url=http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2008/09/03/2354016.htm?site=paralympics/2008 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080912225056/http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2008/09/03/2354016.htm?site=paralympics/2008 |url-status=dead |archive-date=September 12, 2008 |access-date=25 December 2015}}{{cite news |title=Making sense of the categories |publisher=BBC Sport |date=6 October 2000 |url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/olympics2000/paralympics/959701.stm |access-date=25 December 2015}} Each Paralympic sport then has its own classifications, dependent upon the specific physical demands of competition. Events are given a code, made of numbers and letters, describing the type of event and classification of the athletes competing. Some sports, such as athletics, divide athletes by both the category and severity of their disabilities, other sports, for example swimming, group competitors from different categories together, the only separation being based on the severity of the disability.{{cite news |title=A-Z of Paralympic classification |publisher=BBC Sport |date=28 August 2008 |url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/other_sports/disability_sport/7586684.stm |access-date=25 December 2015}}

One pathway for qualifying for Rio involved having a boat have top seven finish at the 2015 Combined World Championships in a medal event where the country had not already qualified through via the 2014 IFDS Sailing World Championships. Argentina qualified for the 2016 Games under this criterion in the 2.4m event with a sixteenth-place finish overall and the sixth country who had not qualified via the 2014 Championships. The boat was crewed by Tomas Saez Raffaelli.{{cite web|title=Sailing Qualification |url=http://www.rio2016.com/sites/all/iframe/infograficos/paralimpicos/vela/pdf/sailing-paralympics.pdf |publisher=International Paralympic Committee |access-date=25 December 2015 |date=2015 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20151225182033/http://www.rio2016.com/sites/all/iframe/infograficos/paralimpicos/vela/pdf/sailing-paralympics.pdf |archive-date=25 December 2015 }}{{cite web|title=2.4m|url=http://www.topyacht.net.au/results/2015/paraworlds/2.4m/SGrp1.htm|publisher=Royal Yacht Club Victoria|access-date=25 December 2015|date=2015}}{{cite web|title=Ten countries guarantee their place in the Rio 2016 Paralympic sailing competition |url=http://www.rio2016.com/en/news/news/ten-countries-guarantee-their-place-in-the-rio-2016-paralympic-sailing-competition |publisher=Rio 2016 Official Website |access-date=27 August 2014 |date=26 August 2014 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140829084941/http://www.rio2016.com/en/news/news/ten-countries-guarantee-their-place-in-the-rio-2016-paralympic-sailing-competition |archive-date=29 August 2014 }} Yet, the boat was crewed at the 2016 Games by Juan Fernández Ocampo, who previously competed at the 2012 Summer Paralympic Games.
