arkOS was a Linux distribution based on Arch Linux, designed primarily for hosting web sites and services on cheap ARM-based devices such as Raspberry Pi, Cubieboard 2, Cubietruck or BeagleBone Black, with plans to expand to other platforms such as x86.{{cite magazine | url=http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/elements/2013/12/the-mission-to-decentralize-the-internet.html | title=The Mission to Decentralize the Internet | magazine=The New Yorker | accessdate=2 February 2014 | author=Kopfstein, Janus}}{{cite web|author=Von Peter Gotzner |url=http://www.spiegel.de/netzwelt/web/crowdfunding-finanziert-betriebssystem-arkos-fuer-heim-server-a-936809.html |title=Gratissystem arkOS: Student entwickelt freie Alternative zu Konzern-Clouds |publisher=Spiegel.de |date=2013-12-03 |accessdate=2014-02-27}}{{cite web|author=|url=https://venturebeat.com/2013/11/28/raspberry-pi-based-home-cloud-project-arkos-beats-funding-goal/ |title=Raspberry Pi-Based Home Cloud Project ArkOS Beats Funding Goal |publisher=Venturebeat |date=2013-11-28 |accessdate=2014-02-27}}{{cite web|url=https://arkos.io/what-is-arkos/ |title=What is arkOS? |publisher=Arkos.io |date= |accessdate=2014-02-04}} It was in operation from 2014 to 2017.
History
Jacob Cook, arkOS' primary developer, originally conceived the idea of arkOS after realizing the extensive amount of time it required to set up his own self-hosted services. He explained it by saying: "I had a good deal of experience with Linux and system administration, but it still took a huge amount of time and research to get the services I wanted set up, and secured properly."{{cite web|url=http://www.techworld.com.au/article/528273/arkos_building_anti-cloud_raspberry_pi_/ |title=ArkOS Building Anti-Cloud Raspberry Pi |publisher=Techworld.com.au |date=2013-10-04 |accessdate=2014-02-27}} Cook aims to reduce dependence from cloud services and make data collection harder.{{cite news|title=This 23-year-old's open-source project, a server running on Raspberry Pi, gives the middle finger to Google|url=https://venturebeat.com/2013/11/10/arkos-secure-google-alternative/|accessdate=11 November 2013|newspaper=Venture Beat|date=10 November 2013|author=Dylan Tweney}}
As of March 2014, arkOS was in its developing stages. The creator of arkOS had also set up CitizenWeb organization,{{cite web |url=https://citizenweb.io/ |title=Home | The CitizenWeb Project |publisher=Citizenweb.io |date=2013-08-13 |accessdate=2016-10-07 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160312035513/https://citizenweb.io/ |archive-date=2016-03-12 |url-status=usurped }} which was responsible for the development of the operating system. CitizenWeb also solicited money through a successful crowdsourcing campaign to finish the platform.{{cite news|last=Cook|first=Jacob|title=Fund arkOS Campaign Launch|url=https://arkos.io/2013/11/fund-arkos-campaign-launch/}}
In April 2017 arkOS was discontinued,{{cite news|last1=Larabel|first1=Michael|title=Arch-Based arkOS Linux Being Discontinued - Phoronix|url=https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=arkOS-Linux-Discontinued|accessdate=24 April 2017|work=Phoronix|date=23 April 2017|language=en}} with the lack of resources as the principal reason.{{cite web|last1=Cook|first1=Jacob|title=arkOS — Sunset|url=https://arkos.io/2017/04/sunset/|website=arkOS|accessdate=24 April 2017|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20170423053136/https://arkos.io/2017/04/sunset/|archivedate=23 April 2017|language=en|date=21 April 2017}} The source code remains available on GitHub.{{Cite web|url=https://github.com/arkOScloud|title=ArkOS Repository|website=Github}}
