Arthur Stallworthy

Stallworthy was born in 1877 in Auckland, New Zealand. He was the eldest son of John Stallworthy,{{cite news | url=http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&cl=search&d=NZH19281115.2.67 | title=The Next Parliament | work=The New Zealand Herald | date=15 November 1928 | volume=LXV | accessdate=28 December 2014 | issue=20104 | page=13}} who had come to New Zealand in 1872,{{sfn|Hamer|1988|p=366}} and who was Member of Parliament for the {{NZ electorate link|Kaipara}} electorate from {{NZ election link year|1905}} to 1911.{{sfn|Wilson|1985|p=236}} His mother was Annie Jane Stallworthy. His father became a newspaper proprietor but was blind for the last ten years of his life, and Arthur Stallworthy took over the running of the Wairoa Bell and Northern Advertiser.{{cite news | url=http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&cl=search&d=NA19231112.2.14 | title=Obituary | work=The Northern Advocate | date=12 November 1923 | accessdate=28 December 2014 | page=4}} After his father's death in November 1923, Arthur Stallworthy inherited the newspaper, which he sold soon after. He then moved to Auckland to be near his children, who attended Auckland University College.

In 1935 he stood for Mayor of Auckland City. He represented the {{NZ electorate link|Eden}} electorate from {{NZ election link year|1928}} to 1935, when he was deselected by the United/Reform Coalition.{{sfn|Wilson|1985|p=236}} He stood in the {{NZ election link year|1935}} as a Democrat losing to the Labour candidate, Bill Anderton.{{sfn|Wilson|1985|p=180}}
