The Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) is one of five continental bodies of governance in volleyball. It governs indoor volleyball, beach volleyball and other disciplines in Asia and Oceania, excluding the transcontinental countries of Russia, Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Georgia, as well as the West Asian countries of Cyprus, Armenia and Israel.{{cite web |url=https://asianvolleyball.net/new/affiliated-national-federations-2/ |title=Affiliated National Federations |publisher=Asian Volleyball Confederation |access-date=14 April 2025 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20250414050841/https://asianvolleyball.net/new/affiliated-national-federations-2/ |archive-date=14 April 2025 |url-status=live }} AVC consists of 65 national association members.
AVC consists of the national volleyball federations of Asia and Oceania, and club competitions including the Asian Volleyball Championships, Nations Cup, and Champions League, and also controls the prize money, regulations, as well as media rights to those competitions.
{{ill|Masaichi Nishikawa|ja|西川政一}} acted as the first president. The current president is Ramon Suzara, a Philippine National Volleyball Federation president, who was elected as AVC's ninth president at the 25th AVC General Assembly in Bangkok in August 2024.{{cite web |url=https://sports.inquirer.net/582699/pnvf-chief-tats-suzara-voted-avc-president |title=PNVF chief Tats Suzara voted AVC president |publisher=Philippine Daily Inquirer |date=30 August 2024 |access-date=14 April 2025 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20241121052416/https://sports.inquirer.net/582699/pnvf-chief-tats-suzara-voted-avc-president |archive-date=21 November 2024 |url-status=live }}{{cite web |url=https://tiebreakertimes.com.ph/tbt/tats-suzara-elected-president-of-avc/310825 |title=Tats Suzara elected president of AVC |publisher=Tiebreaker Times |date=30 August 2024 |access-date=14 April 2025 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20241008051335/https://tiebreakertimes.com.ph/tbt/tats-suzara-elected-president-of-avc/310825 |archive-date=8 October 2024 |url-status=live }}
History
After William G. Morgan, the physical education director of the YMCA in Massachusetts, United States, invented the sport of volleyball in 1895, ten years later, in the early 1900s, the YMCA began spreading the sport to Asian countries such as Qing dynasty, Empire of Japan, the Philippine Islands, and British Raj.{{cite web |url=https://asianvolleyball.net/new/history/ |title=History |publisher=Asian Volleyball Confederation |access-date=14 April 2025 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20250414061513/https://asianvolleyball.net/new/history/ |archive-date=14 April 2025 |url-status=live }}
Later, in 1913, volleyball was included in the Far Eastern Games held in Manila, Philippine Islands, which is considered the first international volleyball competition in the world.{{cite news|last1=England|first1=Frederick|title=History of the Far Eastern Athletic Association|url=http://library.la84.org/OlympicInformationCenter/OlympicReview/1926/BODE3/BODE3i.pdf|access-date=21 July 2014|work=Official Bulletin of the International Olympic Committee|publisher=International Olympic Committee|page=19|date=1926}} AVC was established in 1952, four years after the founding of the FIVB, following an initiative by Masaichi Nishikawa, then President of the Japan Volleyball Association.{{cite web |url=https://wwwbackend2.dpe.go.th/storage/data/manual/doc/601100000161.pdf |script-title=th:คู่มือตัดสินนักกีฬา |trans-title=Volleball Referee Guide |publisher=Department of Physical Education (Thailand) |access-date=14 April 2025 }}
Asia has become one of the most important continents in the world of volleyball, as it has the largest number of member federations and enjoys widespread popularity of the sport. The continent has also hosted many major international volleyball events — most notably, the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, which marked the debut of volleyball in the Olympic Games. In that historic event, the Japanese women's team won the first-ever Olympic gold medal in volleyball.
