Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is a website provided by NASA and Michigan Technological University (MTU). It reads: "Each day a different image or photograph of our universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer."{{Cite web|last=Nemiroff|first=Robert|author2=Jerry Bonnell|title=APOD homepage|publisher=NASA|date=April 3, 2007|url=http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/|access-date=December 30, 2010| archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20101229011541/http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/| archive-date= 29 December 2010 | url-status= live}}

The photograph does not necessarily correspond to a celestial event on the exact day that it is displayed, and images are sometimes repeated.{{Cite web|last=Nemiroff|first=Robert|author2=Jerry Bonnell|title=APOD Frequently Asked Questions|publisher=NASA|url=http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap_faq.html|access-date=December 30, 2010}}

These often relate to current events in astronomy and space exploration. The text has several hyperlinks to more pictures and websites for more information. The images are either visible spectrum photographs, images taken at non-visible wavelengths and displayed in false color, video footage, animations, artist's conceptions, or micrographs that relate to space or cosmology.

Past images are stored in the APOD Archive, with the first image appearing on June 16, 1995.{{Cite APOD|title=Neutron Star Earth|date=16 June 1995|access-date=February 18, 2017}} This initiative has received support from NASA, the National Science Foundation, and MTU. The images are sometimes authored by people or organizations outside NASA, and therefore APOD images are often copyrighted, unlike many other NASA image galleries.{{Cite web|last=Nemiroff|first=Robert|author2=Jerry Bonnell|title=About APOD Image Permissions|publisher=NASA|url=http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/lib/about_apod.html#srapply|access-date=December 30, 2010}}

When the APOD website was created, it received a total of 14 page views on its first day. {{As of|2012}}, the APOD website has received over a billion image views throughout its lifetime.{{Cite APOD|title=APOD Turns 17|date=16 June 2012|access-date=September 25, 2012}} APOD is also translated into 21 languages daily.{{Cite web|title=About APOD|publisher=APOD|url=http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/lib/about_apod.html|access-date=September 25, 2012}}
