Ataria Interpretation Centre is a wetlands interpretation centre and natural history museum for the Salburua wetlands, a Ramsar site and a significant wetlands habitat in the Basque Autonomous Community. The wetlands region is an important green belt on the eastern outskirts of the city of Vitoria - Gasteiz in Álava-Araba province.{{cite web |url= http://www.natura.org/natura2000management/es_salburua_wetland.html |title=Natura 2000 Site Management Case-study: Salburua Wetland, ES |first= |last= |work=natura.org |year=2009 |accessdate=22 April 2012}} Ataria showcases the value of the wetlands, which are classified as a class 1 Habitat of European Community Interest, and the importance of biodiversity to Vitoria-Gasteiz's natural heritage. The Salburua marshes are considered to be "the Basque country's most valuable

area of wetland", according to a Fedenatur report for the European Commission in 2004.{{cite web |last= |first= |date=January 2004 |title=The Place of Periurban Natural Spaces for a Sustainable City |url=http://ec.europa.eu/environment/urban/pdf/good_practices_en.pdf |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20121111040948/http://ec.europa.eu/environment/urban/pdf/good_practices_en.pdf |archive-date=2012-11-11 |accessdate=23 April 2012 |work=European Commission |page=6}}

Features

The centre complex was officially opened in July 2009, after three years of construction, at a cost of just under €7 million.

=Building=

The contemporary building was designed by QVE Arquitectos of Madrid, Spain.{{cite web |url= http://www.e-architect.co.uk/spain/ataria_vitoria.htm |title=Ataria Vitoria, Building Spain, Centro de Interpretación de la Naturaleza de Salburúa |first= |last= |work=e-architect.co.uk |date=1 September 2008 |accessdate=23 April 2012}} It was shortlisted for the World Architecture Festival in 2008 and nominated for the "Mies Arch Award" in 2009.{{cite web|title=ATARIA - Nature Interpretation Centre of Salburúa |url=http://www.miesarch.com/index.php?option=com_mipress_anterior&cerca=ataria&autor=-1&tipologia=-1&classificacio=-1&pais=-1&edicio=-1 |archive-url=https://archive.today/20130129053659/http://www.miesarch.com/index.php?option=com_mipress_anterior&cerca=ataria&autor=-1&tipologia=-1&classificacio=-1&pais=-1&edicio=-1 |url-status=dead |archive-date=29 January 2013 |publisher=Mies Arch |accessdate=21 April 2012 }} Its construction is considered unique in that the building extends over the wetlands it examines.{{cite book|last=Beatley|first=Timothy|title=Biophilic Cities: Integrating Nature Into Urban Design and Planning|year=2010|publisher=Island Press|pages=76|isbn=9781597267151|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=H9Y4z68WSgUC&dq=ataria+salburua&pg=PA76}} 100,000 visits to the centre were recorded in the first year of operation.

The building houses an auditorium, interactive exhibits, classrooms and laboratories for educational use, a café, and offices for the Vitoria-Gasteiz Centre for Environmental Studies.{{cite web|title=ATARIA - Centro de Interpretación de la Naturaleza de Salburúa |url=http://www.worldbuildingsdirectory.com/project.cfm?id=1009 |archive-url=https://archive.today/20130209142123/http://www.worldbuildingsdirectory.com/project.cfm?id=1009 |url-status=dead |archive-date=9 February 2013 |work=World Buildings Directory |accessdate=21 April 2012 }}{{cite web |url= http://www.ramsar.org/cda/en/ramsar-news-archives-2009-urban-wetlands-how-to/main/ramsar/1-26-45-84%5E24039_4000_0__ |title= Urban wetlands – how to implement Resolution X.27 |first= Tobias |last= Salathé |work=ramsar.org |date=16 September 2009 |accessdate=23 April 2012}}

=Observation deck=

A cantilevered observation deck, {{convert|19.2|m|ft}} long, allows visitors to look out over the marshlands. The enclosed walkway deck was constructed of laminated veneer lumber and steel bar trusses. Concrete and steel anchors transfer the force to the ground. The structure was described as "singular" in a paper by Professor J. L. Fernández-Cabo, who compared it to the large cantilevered timber roof of a pavilion at Hanover fairgrounds.{{cite journal|last=Fernández-Cabo |first=José L. |title=A timber cantilevered view walkway in Vitoria, Spain |journal=Proceedings of the ICE - Construction Materials |date=1 November 2009 |volume=162 |issue=4 |pages=167–174 |doi=10.1680/coma.2009.162.4.167 |url=http://www.ewpa.com/Archive/2008/june/Paper_265.pdf |accessdate=23 April 2012 |url-status=dead |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20131203015004/http://www.ewpa.com/Archive/2008/june/Paper_265.pdf |archivedate=3 December 2013 }}
