History

AVC accepted its first class in 1986 at the University of Prince Edward Island. It is the only veterinary school in Atlantic Canada and only one of five in Canada educating Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.

Academics

The DVM program in AVC is "fully accredited by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association and the American Veterinary Medical Association,{{cite journal|title=Canadian veterinary colleges teach access to care|url=https://www.avma.org/javma-news/2020-01-15/canadian-veterinary-colleges-teach-access-care |publisher=American Veterinary Medical Association |journal=JAVMA News |date=2 January 2020 |publication-date=15 January 2020 |access-date=6 March 2020}} and it is recognized by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in the United Kingdom."

AVC's Doctor of Veterinary Medicine is a four-year professional degree program. Each year AVC accepts 68 students into its DVM program. Fifty-one of AVC's annual seats are reserved for residents of Atlantic Canada (New Brunswick has 13 seats, Nova Scotia has 24 seats, Prince Edward Island has 11 seats, and Newfoundland and Labrador has 3 seats). The remaining seats available are for international students. {{cite news |last1=Campbell |first1=Meig |title=N.S. commits $50 million to ensure greater access to vet medicine program {{!}} CBC News |url=https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/vet-student-provincial-seat-funding-nova-scotia-1.7281055 |access-date=24 December 2024 |work=CBC |date=31 July 2024 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20241120100102/https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/vet-student-provincial-seat-funding-nova-scotia-1.7281055 |archive-date=20 November 2024 |location=Kentville, Nova Scotia}}{{cite news |last1=Taylor |first1=Evan |title=New agreement with N.S. and UPEI will secure 24 veterinarian seats for Nova Scotians |url=https://www.cjls.com/2024/08/01/new-agreement-with-n-s-and-upei-will-secure-24-veterinarian-seats-for-nova-scotians/ |access-date=24 December 2024 |publisher=Y95.5 |date=1 August 2024 |language=en}}
