The Australian Basketball Hall of Fame was instituted by the National Basketball League (NBL) in 1998 as the NBL Hall of Fame as part of their 20th season celebrations. The NBL initiated the Hall of Fame to recognise the outstanding players, coaches, referees and contributors to the league. In 2010, the NBL Hall of Fame united with the Basketball Australia Hall of Fame to create the 'Australian Basketball Hall of Fame'.{{cite web|url=http://www.nbl.com.au/nbl-hq/hall-of-fame/|title=Hall of Fame|work=NBL.com.au|url-status=dead|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20100818035232/http://www.nbl.com.au/nbl-hq/hall-of-fame/|archivedate=18 August 2010}}{{cite web|url=http://basketball.net.au/fileadmin/user_upload/BAHOF/Current_ABF_NBL_Hall_of_Famers_March_2010.pdf|title=CURRENT BA/NBL HALL OF FAME MEMBERS (MARCH 2010)|work=basketball.net.au|url-status=dead|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20101212190311/http://basketball.net.au/fileadmin/user_upload/BAHOF/Current_ABF_NBL_Hall_of_Famers_March_2010.pdf|archivedate=12 December 2010}}
