Automolus is a genus of bird in the ovenbird family Furnariidae.
Taxonomy
The genus Automolus was introduced in 1853 by the German naturalist Ludwig Reichenbach to accommodate the taxon Sphenura sulphurascens Lichtenstein, now treated as a subspecies of the white-eyed foliage-gleaner.{{ cite book | last=Reichenbach | first=Ludwig | author-link=Ludwig Reichenbach | year=1853 | chapter=Icones ad synopsin avium No. 10 Scansoriae A | title=Handbuch der speciellen Ornithologie | volume=6 | language=German | location=Dresden und Leipzig | publisher=Expedition Vollständigsten Naturgeschichte | pages=145–218 [146, 173–174] | chapter-url=https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/47722874 }}{{ cite book | editor-last=Peters | editor-first=James Lee | editor-link=James L. The tepui foliage-gleaner has been placed in this genus, but behavior, voice, and morphology all point to it belonging in Syndactyla,Zimmer, K. J., Robbins, M. B., & Kopuchiam, C. (2008). Taxonomy, vocalisations, syringeal morphology and natural history of Automolus roraimae (Furnariidae). Bulletin B.O.U. 128: 187–206. and molecular data confirmed this hypothesis.{{cite journal|last1=Derryberry|first1=Elizabeth P.|last2=Claramunt|first2=Santiago|last3=Derryberry|first3=Graham|last4=Chesser|first4=R. The eastern woodhaunter was formerly placed in its own genus Hyloctistes but molecular evidence showed that it was nested in Automolus.{{cite journal|last1=Claramunt|first1=Santiago|last2=Derryberry|first2=Elizabeth P.|last3=Cadena|first3=Carlos Daniel|last4=Cuervo|first4=Andrés M.|last5=Sanín|first5=Camilo|last6=Brumfield|first6=Robb T.|title=Phylogeny and classification of Automolus foliage-gleaners and allies (Furnariidae)|journal=The Condor|volume=115|issue=2|year=2013|pages=375–385|doi=10.1525/cond.2013.110198|s2cid=59375772 }} The ruddy foliage-gleaner and the Santa Marta foliage-gleaner, formerly placed in Automolus, are actually more closely related to Clibanornis foliage-gleaners.
