The name Autre Ne Veut is taken from an inscription in French on a 15th-century British dress ornament that is stored at The Cloisters and is translated to English as "I want no other."{{cite tweet|user=AutreNV|number=314900688914247680|date=22 March 2013|title=Origin story}}{{cite web|publisher=Metropolitan Museum of Art|url=http://www.metmuseum.org/collections/search-the-collections/70009918?img=0|title=Hat or Dress Ornament|accessdate=10 July 2013}}

Early life and education

Ashin was born on 20 April 1982 in Raleigh, North Carolina.{{cite web |publisher= Noisey |url= https://www.vice.com/da/article/autre-ne-veut-age-of-transparency-interview-profile-2015/|title=You Say You Want to Get Out: A Day in the Park with Autre Ne Veut|author=Kyle Kramer|date=2 October 2015}} They{{cite web |publisher= Pitchfork |url=https://pitchfork.com/news/autre-ne-veut-announces-first-album-in-nearly-a-decade-shares-video-for-new-song-watch/ |title=Autre Ne Veut Shares First New Song in Over 6 Years: Watch the Video|author=Rob Arcand|date=5 October 2022}} earned their undergraduate degree at Hampshire College, where they lived with Daniel Lopatin (later of Oneohtrix Point Never). After college, Ashin lived briefly in New York City and Chicago before establishing their home in Brooklyn. They briefly enrolled in a master's program in clinical psychology but dropped out in order to focus on their music.

Career

Ashin's debut album and the subsequent "Body EP" were recorded at home.{{cite web|publisher=Pitchfork|url=http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/14925-autre-ne-veut/|title=Autre Ne Veut / Autre Ne Veut|author=Battaglia, Andy|date=10 December 2010}} Additionally, although it was never heard by the public before a one-time performance in 2016, Ashin recorded a “lost” album. Written during the winter of 2011-12 between “Body EP” and “Anxiety”, Ashin titled the album “kingofpop” in a characteristic self-deprecating reference to Michael Jackson.{{cite web |publisher=Stereogum |url= http://www.stereogum.com/1885601/watch-autre-ne-veut-play-lost-album-kingofpop-in-brooklyn/video/ |title= Watch Autre Ne Veut Play Lost Album kingofpop in Brooklyn |author= Helman, Peter |date= 29 June 2016}}

Ashin's 2013 album, Anxiety, was self-produced as well; however, Ford & Lopatin contributed to the recording in a studio. Anxiety received a 7.6 out of 10 on the meta-review site anydecentmusic.com.{{cite web |publisher= AnyDecentMusic? |url=http://anydecentmusic.com/review/5258/Autre-Ne-Veut-Anxiety.aspx |title= Autre Ne Veut / Anxiety |accessdate= 8 July 2013}} including Best New Music from Pitchfork.{{cite web|publisher=Pitchfork|url=http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/17645-autre-ne-veut-anxiety/|title=Autre Ne Veut / Anxiety|date=26 February 2013|author=Ian Cohen}} Gorilla vs. Bear named Anxiety as "Album of Year (so far)" in June 2013.{{cite web|title=favorites of 2013.5|date=10 June 2013 |url=http://www.gorillavsbear.net/2013/06/10/favorites-of-2013-5/|publisher=Gorilla vs. Bear}}
