Avalanche Glacier is located on the west to southwest slopes of Mount Adams a stratovolcano in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest in the U.S. state of Washington.{{Cite map|publisher=TopoQwest (United States Geological Survey Maps)|title=Mount Adams West, WA|url=http://www.topoquest.com/map.php?lat=46.19051&lon=-121.50479&datum=nad83&zoom=8&map=auto&coord=d&mode=zoomout&size=m|accessdate=2012-11-03}} The glacier descends from the White Salmon Glacier at {{convert|10200|ft|abbr=on}} to a terminus near {{convert|7600|ft|abbr=on}}. Avalanche Glacier has been in a general state of retreat for over 100 years and lost 59 percent of its surface area between 1904 and 2006.{{cite journal|last=Sitts|first=Danielle |author2=Andrew G.
