Aztaka is a 2D side-scrolling action role-playing video game for the Microsoft Windows and OS X developed by Canadian independent game developer Citérémis.{{cite web | url = http://nl.ign.com/all/62504/feature/metroidvania-game-design-101 | title = Metroidvania: Game Design 101 | first = Rick | last = Otten | date = September 30, 2013 | accessdate = July 13, 2016 | publisher = IGN Benelux | quote = "Ook in het Westen hebben Metroidvania-fans echter niet stilgestaan. It puts the player in the role of an Aztec warrior named "Huitzilo" who must gather seven phonographs to save his civilization from its angry gods.
Gameplay
The gameplay is reminiscent of an old-school action role-playing game. The player climbs, crawls and jumps his way around a level to explore it and find new items. Experience points are gained for every enemy killed, and they are spent to upgrade the character's attributes and special skills.{{cite web | url = http://www.gametunnel.com/best-games-of-september-2009-article.php | title = Indie Game Round-Up [Sept 2009 Edition] | first = Adam | last = Clark | date = September 10, 2009 | accessdate = February 25, 2019 | website = Game Tunnel | archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20100316052509/http://www.gametunnel.com/best-games-of-september-2009-article.php | archive-date = 2010-03-16}} There is also an inventory screen where discovered items can be equipped and where merchandise bought from merchants (like potions) can be used.{{cite web | url = https://www.softpedia.com/reviews/games/pc/Aztaka-Review-135065.shtml | title = Aztaka - The Untold Aztec Story | first = Adrian | last = Arsene | date = February 17, 2010 | accessdate = May 18, 2019 | website = Softpedia | archive-date = May 7, 2023 | archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20230507215108/https://www.softpedia.com/reviews/games/pc/Aztaka-Review-135065.shtml | url-status = live }}

The mouse is also used to cast spells, both offensive and defensive, by selecting them from the bottom-screen magic inventory and then clicking at on-screen targets in succession to launch them.{{cite web | url = https://www.gamasutra.com/blogs/AndrewTing/20110116/88781/Aztaka_brilliant_game_poor_marketing.php?print=1 | title = Aztaka: brilliant game, poor marketing? | first = Andrew | last = Ting | date = January 16, 2011 | access-date = May 18, 2019 | website = Gamasutra | archive-date = November 15, 2013 | archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20131115014923/http://www.gamasutra.com/blogs/AndrewTing/20110116/88781/Aztaka_brilliant_game_poor_marketing.php?print=1 | url-status = dead }}
Artwork throughout the game reflects historical Mesoamerica, with square-shaped pyramids, stone temples, mystic engravings, dense jungles, and barren mountaintops. The game's musical score features vocals, flute, cello, organ, and drums.
