Construction
Mission
Its intended mission is to guard Philippine waters against illegal fishing, maritime protection and fisheries control, with secondary mission of supporting law enforcement agencies like the Philippine Coast Guard in patrolling Philippine territorial waters and Exclusive Economic Zones.
The ship has been seen providing support to Filipino fishermen in the Bajo de Masinloc / Panatag Shoal (Scarborough Shoal) in late September 2023.{{cite web|url=https://www.philstar.com/headlines/2023/09/26/2299095/pcg-cuts-through-china-sea-barrier |title=PCG cuts through China Sea barrier |publisher=Philstar.com / The Philippine Star |date=2023-09-26 |accessdate=2023-09-27}} On 30 April 2024, the Datu Bankaw was delivering food and fuel to Filipino fishermen at Scarborough when it was fired upon by Chinese coast guard ships with water cannons, and the ship collided twice with Chinese boats. Datu Bankaw{{'s}} railings were damaged, along with "some ship equipment".{{cite news |title=China fires water cannons at Philippine ships in South China Sea |url=https://asia.nikkei.com/Politics/International-relations/South-China-Sea/China-fires-water-cannons-at-Philippine-ships-in-South-China-Sea |access-date=30 April 2024 |work=Nikkei Asia |date=30 April 2024}}
