The film's story was written by Rajamouli's father V. Vijayendra Prasad, who told him a story about Sivagami, a woman who carries a baby in her hand while crossing a river, and a few years later about Kattappa, which intrigued Rajamouli. His fascination with Mahabharata and the tales of Amar Chitra Katha and Chandamama further fueled his interest in the story. It took the writers three months to complete the final draft. The soundtrack and background score were composed by M. M. Keeravani, while the cinematography, production design, and VFX were handled by K. K. Senthil Kumar, Sabu Cyril and V. Plot

An elderly woman emerges from a cave underneath a mountain, carrying an infant. While trying to cross a raging river, she is swept away by the current. Facing imminent death, she holds the baby aloft and prays to Lord Shiva to spare the baby, Mahendra Baahubali, for the sake of Mahishmati Kingdom. The child is saved by the people of Amburi tribe, and their chieftain's wife Sanga adopts him, naming him Siva.

Siva grows up to be an ambitious and mischievous child, obsessed with ascending the mountain despite his mother's pleas, but fails every time. As a young man, he shows superhuman strength while lifting a lingam of Lord Shiva and placing it at the foot of the mountain. As he does so, a mask falls from above. Realising it belongs to a woman, Siva is determined to find its owner, and finally succeeds in climbing the mountain. Upon reaching the top, he encounters Avantika, to whom the mask belongs, and follows her. He learns that she is a member of a resistance group dedicated to overthrowing the tyrannical King Bhallaladeva of Mahishmati, and rescuing the captive princess Devasena.

Siva, smitten with Avantika, decides to pledge himself to her cause and departs for Mahishmati. Infiltrating the royal palace disguised as a guard, he distracts Bhallaladeva and rescues Devasena. Bhallaladeva sends his son Bhadra and his loyal slave and general Kattappa to pursue Siva. In the ensuing fight, Siva beheads Bhadra as the Amburi tribals and the resistance members arrive at the scene. Kattappa, upon seeing Siva's face, falls into submission and proclaims him 'Baahubali'. Kattappa then reveals to Siva that he is Mahendra Baahubali, son of Amarendra Baahubali, the famous warrior prince of Mahishmati, and the woman who saved him was Queen Sivagami, his grandmother.

Amarendra Baahubali was the orphan son of King Vikramadeva. After the King's demise, Sivagami, his elder brother Bijjaladeva's wife, was appointed Regent and decided to raise Baahubali along with her son Bhallaladeva, in order to select the next King. While the two showed immense promise, Bhallaladeva retained the power-hungry nature of his father while Baahubali was beloved by the people. When Mahishmati was threatened by the Kalakeya tribe and its chief Inkoshi, it was decided that whoever defeats the tribe would be crowned. Sivagami however demanded that Inkoshi be captured alive after he delivered an insult. Bhallaladeva was ruthless and killed Kalakeyas and villagers indiscriminately, killing Inkoshi as well, while Baahubali used innovative tactics, raised the morale of soldiers and saved the villagers. In light of this, Baahubali was made heir apparent by Sivagami while Bhallaladeva was chosen as his commander.

Siva and his adoptive parents, upon hearing this tale, wish to meet Baahubali. A dejected Kattappa explains that Baahubali was killed by a traitor, and reveals himself to be that traitor.

| quote = I was about 7 years old when I started reading comics called Amar Chitra Katha that are published in India. They're not about a superhero, but they encompass all the stories of India, the folklore, the mythology, everything. But most of these stories are about Indian historical figures. I was fascinated by the forts, the battles, the kings, I not only used to read those stories but I kept telling those stories to my friends in my own way.

The fictional language Kiliki (also referred to as Kilikili) spoken by the Kalakeyas, a ferocious warrior tribe, was created by Madhan Karky for the film. It is said to be the first fictional language to be created for Indian film.{{Cite web |date=14 July 2015 |title=Baahubali does a Lord of the Rings! While Karky was pursuing a PhD in Australia, he took up a part-time job of teaching and baby-sitting children. During one such interaction, he thought it would be fun to create a new language that could be easily grasped. Basic words were first made up and opposites were represented by word reversals – me was min and you was nim. The language, with 100 words, was called "Click" to highlight its simplicity. This formed the foundation for Kiliki.{{Cite web |title=5 Sentences And Their Translations in Kiliki, The Fictitious Language Used In 'Baahubali' |url=http://www.huffingtonpost.in/2015/07/14/5-sentences-and-their-translations-in-kiliki-the-fictitious-lan/ |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20161114084143/http://www.huffingtonpost.in/2015/07/14/5-sentences-and-their-translations-in-kiliki-the-fictitious-lan/ |archive-date=14 November 2016 |access-date=21 April 2017 |website=Huffington Post India}}

  • Kilikili consists of at least 750 words and more than 40 concrete grammar rules.
  • It was designed to be an intuitive language: Karky said he used hard consonants and soft consonants depending on the nature of the words' meanings.

The Tamil version of the film faced a controversy relating to a word used in the film. On 22 July 2015, activists of Dalit group Puratchi Pulikal Iyakkam hurled petrol bombs outside the 'Tamil, Jaya' multiplex in Madurai screening the Tamil version of the film. The Dalit group Puratchi Pulikal Iyakkam protested against the movie over the inclusion of the word 'pagadai' (gambler). Members of the group claimed the words, used by caste Hindus to address members of the Arunthathiyar Dalit sub-caste, are considered derogatory against Dalits. Dialogue writer of Tamil version, Madhan Karky issued an apology for offending Dalits.{{Cite web |title=Dalit Party Members Hurls Bomb on Baahubali Theatre |url=http://www.newindianexpress.com/states/tamil_nadu/Dalit-Party-Members-Hurls-Bomb-on-Baahubali-Theatre/2015/07/23/article2935377.ece |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20151113003338/http://www.newindianexpress.com/states/tamil_nadu/Dalit-Party-Members-Hurls-Bomb-on-Baahubali-Theatre/2015/07/23/article2935377.ece |archive-date=13 November 2015 |access-date=22 October 2015 |website=The New Indian Express}}

Deepanjana Pal of Firstpost called it "Rajamouli's tour de force", terming it as "elaborate, well-choreographed and [having] some breathtaking moments." Prabhas and Dagubatti are both in their elements as the warriors who approach warfare in two distinctive styles. The outcome of the battle is no surprise, but there are enough clever tactics and twists to keep the audience hooked. The biggest surprise, however, lies in the film's final shot, which gives you a glimpse into the sequel that will come out next year."{{Cite web |date=13 July 2015 |title=Bahubali review: With hunky heroes and great battle scenes, SS Rajamouli's fantasy film is epic |url=http://www.firstpost.com/bollywood/bahubali-review-hunky-heroes-great-battle-scenes-ss-rajamoulis-fantasy-film-epic-2335958.html |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150730121835/http://www.firstpost.com/bollywood/bahubali-review-hunky-heroes-great-battle-scenes-ss-rajamoulis-fantasy-film-epic-2335958.html |archive-date=30 July 2015 |access-date=1 August 2015 |website=Firstpost}} Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV India rated the film with three stars out of five and stated, "The spectacular universe that the film conjures up is filled with magic, but the larger-than-life characters that populate its extraordinary expanse do not belong to any known mythic landscape. To that extent, Baahubali, driven by the titular superhero who pulls off mind-boggling feats both in love and in war, throws up many a surprise that isn't altogether meaningless."{{Cite web |title=Baahubali Movie Review |url=http://movies.ndtv.com/movie-reviews/baahubali-movie-review-1150 |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150717063532/http://movies.ndtv.com/movie-reviews/baahubali-movie-review-1150 |archive-date=17 July 2015 |access-date=1 August 2015 |website=NDTVMovies.com |publisher=NDTV Movies}}

Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express praised the film: "Right from its opening frames, Baahubali holds out many promises: of adventure and romance, love and betrayal, valour and weakness. And it delivers magnificently on each of them. This is full-tilt, fully-assured filmmaking of a very high order. Baahubali is simply spectacular."{{Cite web |date=12 July 2015 |title=Baahubali review: S S Rajamouli's film holds out many promises |url=http://indianexpress.com/article/entertainment/movie-review/baahubali-movie-review-s-s-rajamouli/ |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150711125008/http://indianexpress.com/article/entertainment/movie-review/baahubali-movie-review-s-s-rajamouli/ |archive-date=11 July 2015 |website=The Indian Express}} In her review for The Hindu, Sangeetha Devi Dundoo wrote, "The war formations that form a chunk of the latter portions of the film are the best we've seen in Indian cinema so far. These portions are spectacular and show the technical finesse of the cinematographer (K.K. Senthil Kumar) and the visual effects teams. The waterfall, the mystical forests and water bodies above the cliffs and the lead pair escaping an avalanche all add to the spectacle. Give into its magic, without drawing comparisons to Hollywood flicks."{{Cite news |date=10 July 2015 |title=Baahubali: A little more, a little less |url=http://www.thehindu.com/features/cinema/cinema-reviews/baahubali-review-a-little-more-a-little-less/article7407650.ece |url-status=live |archive-url=https://archive.today/20170322084308/http://www.thehindu.com/features/cinema/cinema-reviews/baahubali-review-a-little-more-a-little-less/article7407650.ece |archive-date=22 March 2017 |access-date=1 August 2015 |work=The Hindu |issn=0971-751X}}

Had the story not been so jaded, this would've gone into the history books as an all-time classic. But that's not the case. It has its set of storytelling flaws, but even those are overshadowed by Rajamouli's ideas and execution. This is definitely worthy of being India's most expensive film. She added, "SS Rajamouli and his team put up a fascinating wild, wild east adventure. It takes pluck to conceive a world like the one seen in Baahubali and to pull it off on a level which is on par with the international standards. The almost 45-minute-long battle sequence at the end is not just one of the biggest climaxes, but also the action spectacle rarely seen in Indian cinema. Critics praised the film for its direction, technical values, and the actors' performances. Lisa Tsering based on The Hollywood Reporter wrote, "The story has been told many times before – a child is born destined for greatness and as a man vanquishes the forces of evil – but in the confident hands of accomplished South Indian director S.S. Mike McCahill of The Guardian rated the film four stars out of five, praising the film, "Rajamouli defers on the latter for now, but his skilful choreography of these elements shucks off any cynicism one might carry into Screen 1: wide-eyed and wondrous, his film could be a blockbuster reboot, or the first blockbuster ever made, a reinvigoration of archetypes that is always entertaining, and often thrilling, to behold."{{Cite news |last=McCahill |first=Mike |date=12 July 2015 |title=Baahubali: The Beginning review – fantastic bang for your buck in most expensive Indian movie ever made |url=https://www.theguardian.com/film/2015/jul/12/baahubali-the-beginning-review-fantastic-bang-for-your-buck-in-most-expensive-indian-movie-ever-made |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150814113625/http://www.theguardian.com/film/2015/jul/12/baahubali-the-beginning-review-fantastic-bang-for-your-buck-in-most-expensive-indian-movie-ever-made |archive-date=14 August 2015 |access-date=1 August 2015 |work=The Guardian}} Suprateek Chatterjee of The Huffington Post wrote, "However, all said and done, Baahubali: The Beginning is a remarkable achievement. What Rajamouli has pulled off here, despite its flaws, is nothing short of a miracle, especially when you take into account India's notoriously risk-averse filmmaking environment and when the film ends on a tantalizing cliffhanger (paving the way for Baahubali: The Conclusion, due to release next year), one can't help but applaud his singularly brave vision. As the cliché goes, a journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step, but it doesn't really matter if that first step is shaky as long as it lands firmly and confidently."{{Cite web |title='Baahubali: The Beginning' Review: A Giddy Spectacle, If Somewhat Uneven |url=http://www.huffingtonpost.in/suprateek-chatterjee/baahubali-the-beginning-r_b_7767206.html |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150801165516/http://www.huffingtonpost.in/suprateek-chatterjee/baahubali-the-beginning-r_b_7767206.html |archive-date=1 August 2015 |access-date=1 August 2015 |website=The Huffington Post}}
