Bab Doukkala ({{Langx|ar|باب دكالة|lit=gate of the Doukkala}}) is the main northwestern gate of the medina (historic walled city) of Marrakesh, Morocco.
Description
The gate dates back to around 1126 CE when the Almoravid emir Ali ibn Yusuf built the first walls of the city.{{Cite journal|last=Allain|first=Charles|last2=Deverdun|first2=Gaston|date=1957|title=Les portes anciennes de Marrakech|url=http://www.hesperis-tamuda.com/fr/index.php/archives/archives-1959-1950/132-hesperis-tamuda-1957|journal=Hespéris|volume=44|pages=85–126|access-date=2020-09-09|archive-date=2021-02-28|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210228031528/http://www.hesperis-tamuda.com/fr/index.php/archives/archives-1959-1950/132-hesperis-tamuda-1957|url-status=dead}}{{Cite book|last=Deverdun|first=Gaston|title=Marrakech: Des origines à 1912|publisher=Éditions Techniques Nord-Africaines|year=1959|location=Rabat}} Doukkala, was that of both a Berber tribe and of a region between Marrakesh and Casablanca today. Unlike many other gates of the city, it has not been subject to major modifications (at least in its floor plan) and retains its original sophisticated bent entrance design from the Almoravid period. The passage inside the gate bends at a straight angle twice: one enters from the west, turns south, then turns east before emerging into the city.{{Cite book|last=Wilbaux|first=Quentin|title=La médina de Marrakech: Formation des espaces urbains d'une ancienne capitale du Maroc|publisher=L'Harmattan|year=2001|isbn=2747523888|location=Paris}} Today the gate is flanked by other simple openings in the wall to allow for easy circulation. The city's main intercity bus terminal is also located just outside and slightly north of Bab Doukkala gate.{{Cite web|title=Bus Travel - Marrakesh|url=http://www.fodors.com/world/africa-and-middle-east/morocco/marrakesh/feature_.html|access-date=2020-09-09|website=Fodor's}}{{Cite web|title=Gare Routière {{!}} Marrakesh, Morocco Transportation|url=https://www.lonelyplanet.com/morocco/marrakesh/transportation/gare-routiere/a/poi-tra/1144486/1316370|access-date=2020-09-09|website=Lonely Planet|language=en}}
