History
Baldwin Village was developed in the early 1940s and 1950s by architect Clarence Stein, as an apartment complex for young families. Baldwin Village is occasionally called "The Jungles" by locals because of the tropical trees and foliage (such as palms, banana trees and begonias) that once thrived among the area's tropical-style postwar apartment buildings.{{cite web|url=http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2011/05/south-la-drug-trafficking-gang-targeted-by-federal-local-raid.html|title=Baldwin Village drug trafficking gang targeted in raid led by federal, local authorities|newspaper=Los Angeles Times |department=L.A. Now |first=Richard |last=Winton |date=May 19, 2011 |access-date=9 September 2016}} The Los Angeles City Council changed the name in 1990, after residents complained that it reinforced the neighborhood's image as a wild and menacing place.{{Cite thesis|last=McChesney|first=Keegan|date=April 20, 2016|title=FROM RISK TO RESILIENCE: Examining environmental justice indicators in Los Angeles' most climate vulnerable community|url=https://www.oxy.edu/sites/default/files/assets/UEP/Comps/2016/McChesney%20FromRisktoResilience%201.pdf|publisher= Occidental College|pages=26–30|access-date=September 5, 2020}} They renamed it Baldwin Village after the Baldwin Hills neighborhood.{{cite news | last = Hayasaki | first = Erika | title = Gang Violence Fuels Racial Tensions The fatal shooting of a 3-year-old girl in Baldwin Village escalates friction among blacks and Latinos in the neighborhood. | newspaper = Los Angeles Times | date = September 30, 2006 | url = https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2006-sep-30-me-baldwin30-story.html }}
Development
=Marlton Square=
Development of Marlton Square was stalled in bankruptcy after years of work and millions of dollars of public and private funds until 2012.
=Kaiser Permanente=
The neighborhood houses a 100,000 square foot Kaiser Permanente medical office building and outdoor plaza which opened on September 7, 2017.{{cite web|url=https://thrive.kaiserpermanente.org/care-near-you/southern-california/west-los-angeles/locations/baldwin-hills-crenshaw/|title=Care near you|website=thrive.kaiserpermanente.org|access-date=2017-06-13}}
=Costco=
A first-of-its-kind, mixed-use development featuring a Costco store beneath 800 residential units has broken ground in the neighborhood as of September 2024. Occupying the former site of a cable company facility, the development will include over 180 units of affordable housing and surpass the Baldwin Village Apartments as the largest single residential complex in the area. Originally conceived as only a retail development, the project took advantage of new state laws streamlining development approvals and loosening zoning laws for projects with large amounts of affordable housing.{{Cite news |last=Lloyd |first=Jonathan |last2=Valles • • |first2=Michelle |date=2024-09-18 |title=New Costco with apartments breaks ground in South LA |url=https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/costco-with-apartments-south-la-baldwin-hills/3514264/ |access-date=2024-10-26 |work=NBC Los Angeles |language=en-US}}
