The Bank of Spain Building (Spanish: edificio del Banco de España) is the main headquarters of the Bank of Spain. Located in Madrid, it lies at the crossing of the Calle de Alcalá and the Paseo del Prado.

History

Works started on 4 July 1884,{{Sfn|Navascués Palacio|1982|p=107}} following a project by {{ill|Eduardo Adaro|es}} and {{ill|Severiano Sáinz de la Lastra|es}}.{{Sfn|Navascués Palacio|1982|p=93}}

Finished by 1891, the building was inaugurated on 3 March 1891.{{Sfn|Navascués Palacio|1982|p=110}}

The building endured a first enlargement process between 1932 and 1936.{{Sfn|Montoliú|2014}} Further renovations were finished in 1969 and 2006.{{Sfn|Montoliú|2014}}

In December 1999, the building was declared Property of Cultural Interest, under the Monument descriptor.{{Smallcaps|Ministerio de Educación y Cultura}}: {{Cite journal|title=Real Decreto 1933/1999, de 17 de diciembre, por el que se declara bien de interés cultural, con categoría de monumento el edificio del Banco de España, en Madrid|journal=Boletín Oficial del Estado|issue=313|date=31 December 1999|page=46565|issn=0212-033X|url=https://www.boe.es/boe/dias/1999/12/31/pdfs/A46565-46565.pdf}}

The building houses 280 tonnes of the Spanish gold reserve. This gold reserve is protected by a complex mechanism and is placed 37 meters underground. The security system includes three armored doors, a trench with a one-person wide bridge, and a water-flooding system that uses the water from two adjacent rivers that go below the Cibeles fountain, located next to the bank's building.{{Cite web |last=País |first=Ediciones El |date=2019-07-26 |title=La trampa de agua del Banco de España existe, pero no es como en 'La casa de papel' |url=https://verne.elpais.com/verne/2019/07/26/articulo/1564138964_961852.html |access-date=2025-02-21 |website=Verne |language=es}}{{Cite web |date=2022-06-18 |title=Así de inexpugnable es la cámara acorazada del Banco de España (y sí, también se inunda) |url=https://www.larazon.es/madrid/20220618/gudhojxu2jcxrg7j3yypxd2f4i.html |access-date=2025-02-21 |website=La Razón |language=es}}

The building was to be used as a film location for the third season of the Spanish series Money Heist, but due to this security system, it was decided to be filmed in the Spanish Ministry of Development.{{Cite web |date=2022-06-18 |title=Así de inexpugnable es la cámara acorazada del Banco de España (y sí, también se inunda) |url=https://www.larazon.es/madrid/20220618/gudhojxu2jcxrg7j3yypxd2f4i.html |access-date=2025-02-21 |website=La Razón |language=es}}
