Barbara-Maria "Barbi" Henneberger (4 October 1940 – 12 April 1964) was an alpine ski racer and Olympic medalist from West Germany. She competed for the United Team of Germany at the 1960 and 1964 Winter Olympics, and at the 1962 World Championships.
Ski racing
Born in Oberstaufen, Bavaria, Henneberger competed in the 1960 Winter Olympics at Squaw Valley at age 19. She won the bronze medal in the slalom,{{cite news |url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=bPwxAAAAIBAJ&sjid=j-QFAAAAIBAJ&pg=7508%2C3418626 |newspaper=Ottawa Citizen |location=(Canada) |agency=Associated Press (photo) |title=Proud medal winners |date=27 February 1960 |page=9}} finished eleventh in the downhill, and 15th in the giant slalom. Henneberger was third in the combined, which earned a world championship medal. Four years later in 1964 at Innsbruck, she finished fifth in the downhill, seventh in the giant slalom, and tenth in the slalom.
In North America to model clothes after the 1963 season ended in Europe, Henneberger was not planning to compete at the U.S. Alpine Championships in Alaska at Alyeska in early April. Using borrowed skis, she won the downhill and slalom and finished second in the giant slalom.{{cite magazine |url=https://www.si.com/vault/1963/04/15/618757/cool-skiing-in-sunbaked-alaska |magazine=Sports Illustrated |last=Terrell |first=Roy |title=Cool skiing in sun-baked Alaska |date=15 April 1963 |page=54}}{{cite news |url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=0RhWAAAAIBAJ&sjid=CeMDAAAAIBAJ&pg=4761,867102 |newspaper=Eugene Register-Guard |location=(Oregon) |agency=Associated Press |title=Jean Saubert wins slalom |date=6 April 1963 |page=2B}}{{cite news |url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=KW0pAAAAIBAJ&sjid=3egDAAAAIBAJ&pg=1045%2C3095434 |newspaper=Spokesman-Review |location=(Spokane, Washington)|agency=Associated Press |title=Jean Saubert giant slalom ski winner |date=6 April 1963 |page=10}}{{cite news |url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=0xhWAAAAIBAJ&sjid=CeMDAAAAIBAJ&pg=6704%2C1389257 |newspaper=Eugene Register-Guard |location=(Oregon) |agency=Associated Press |title=Second, but still champs |date=8 April 1963 |page=4B}}
Death
Following the 1964 season, Henneberger and a dozen others were in Switzerland near St. Moritz in April to film the promotional movie Ski-Fascination for Willy Bogner, Jr. Caught in a spring avalanche, she died at age 23 in Val Selin along with U.S. racer Buddy Werner. Both had raced ahead of the first avalanche, but were caught by a second from an opposite slope.{{cite news |url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=csMtAAAAIBAJ&sjid=_Z4FAAAAIBAJ&pg=7050%2C5112290 |newspaper=Montreal Gazette |agency=Canadian Press |title=German skier not to blame for 2 deaths |date=29 August 1964 |page=2}} Found hours later under {{convert|8|to|10|ft|}} of snow, their deaths were attributed to suffocation,{{cite magazine |url=https://www.si.com/vault/1964/04/20/612939/scorecard|magazine=Sports Illustrated |title=The Man with No Luck |date=20 April 1964 |page=15}}{{cite news |url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=3oE0AAAAIBAJ&sjid=CZsEAAAAIBAJ&pg=5215%2C2253088 |newspaper=Tuscaloosa News |location=(Alabama) |agency=Associated Press |title=Ski star killed racing avalanche |date=13 April 1964 |page=1}}{{cite news |url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=io5GAAAAIBAJ&sjid=lfIMAAAAIBAJ&pg=4222,4632923 |newspaper=Lewiston Evening Journal |location=(Maine) |agency=Associated Press |title=Fate finally put finger on Buddy Werner |date=13 April 1964 |page=10}}{{cite news |url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=BFtYAAAAIBAJ&sjid=lfcDAAAAIBAJ&pg=2515,3165850 |newspaper=Spokane Daily Chronicle |location=(Washington) |agency=Associated Press |title=Plaques honor slide victims |date=12 December 1964 |page=9}} and were the only two fatalities in the group.{{cite news |url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=Vy9PAAAAIBAJ&sjid=DU4DAAAAIBAJ&pg=2945%2C4473922 |agency=UPI |newspaper=Prescott Evening Courier |location=(Arizona)|title=German skier named in death of 2 companions |date=27 August 1964 |page=1}} Her funeral and procession in Munich were attended by thousands.{{cite news |url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=6FYaAAAAIBAJ&sjid=bycEAAAAIBAJ&pg=3011,3381850&dq=barbara+henneberger&hl=en |archive-url=https://archive.today/20130124130306/http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=6FYaAAAAIBAJ&sjid=bycEAAAAIBAJ&pg=3011,3381850&dq=barbara+henneberger&hl=en |url-status=dead |archive-date=24 January 2013 |newspaper=Milwaukee Journal |agency=Associated Press |title=AP wirephoto |date=16 April 1964 |page=1-final }}
