Barqueiros became daily news in Portugal in the 1980s due to mass protests by the citizens of Barqueiros against the mining of Kaolin. This became known in Portugal as the Guerra dos Caulinos. The conflict dragged on through the 1980s until it finally escalated resulting in the shooting death of 20-year-old José Carlos Manhente Simões on 26 June 1989 by GNR forces (Guarda Nacional Republicana).{{cite web |url=http://missixty2005.blogspot.ca/2007/11/sem-caulinos-vivemos-se.html |archive-url=https://archive.today/20130410025506/http://missixty2005.blogspot.ca/2007/11/sem-caulinos-vivemos-se.html |archive-date=10 April 2013 |language=Portuguese |title=Guerra dos Caulinos |url-status=dead |accessdate=20 March 2013 }}{{cite web |url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EzZ4q4XsmhY/? |language=Portuguese |title=Barqueiros June 1989 Guerra dos Caulinos |accessdate=20 March 2013}}{{cbignore}}{{Dead Youtube links|date=February 2022}}
