Baseball in China

In 1959, a nationwide baseball competition began.{{Cite web |last=xgzhang |title=Baseball Becoming Popular in China |url=http://www.chinatoday.com.cn/ctenglish/2018/cs/201802/t20180206_800116717.html |access-date=2024-06-03 |website=China Today |language=en}} However, in the same year, Mao Zedong disbanded all the teams and outlawed baseball and other Western-origin influences as part of the Cultural Revolution. Baseball activities only restarted after Mao's death in 1976. In 2002, the China Baseball League was formed and in 2019 the China National Baseball League. China now participates in the World Baseball Classic. Variations of baseball, such as slow-pitch softball and Baseball5, have helped power the growth of the sport in China.
