History

Bay Nature founder David Loeb was inspired to start the magazine after failing to find a local natural history periodical following a visit to China Camp State Park. In 1997, he sent a proposal to Heyday Books publisher, Malcolm Margolin, who agreed to publish the magazine. The first issue was published in January 2001.{{Cite web |last=Marech |first=Rona |date=2001-01-05 |title=Magazine Captures Nature of Bay Area |url=https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/Magazine-Captures-Nature-of-Bay-Area-2967840.php |access-date=2024-01-26 |website=San Francisco Chronicle |language=en}} In 2004, it became a nonprofit.{{Cite web |title=About Bay Nature |url=https://baynature.org/about-us/ |access-date=2024-01-26 |website=Bay Nature |language=en-US}}
