Beckwithshaw is a village and civil parish in the county of North Yorkshire, England, about {{convert|2.5|mi|km|0}} south-west of Harrogate.

History

Beckwithshaw takes its name from the now smaller settlement of Beckwith, {{convert|1|mi|adj=on}} to the east. The suffix "shaw", first recorded in 1323, is from the Old English sceaga, meaning a copse.{{cite book|last=Smith|first=A. H.|authorlink=Albert Hugh Smith|title=The Place-names of the West Riding of Yorkshire|volume=5|publisher=Cambridge University Press|year=1961|page=116}}

Beckwithshaw was historically a hamlet in the ancient parish of Pannal.{{cite web|url=http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/WRY/Pannal/|publisher=genuki.org.uk|title=GENUKI: Pannal |accessdate=16 January 2017}} When the village of Pannal was removed from the civil parish of Pannal in 1937, Beckwithshaw became the largest settlement in the parish. The name of the civil parish was changed from Pannal to Beckwithshaw in 2010.{{cite web|url=http://www.communities.gov.uk/documents/localgovernment/pdf/1925205.pdf|title=Bulletin of changes to local authority arrangements, areas and names in England: Orders and changes made by the Government and councils between 1 April 2009 and 31 March 2010|publisher=Department for Communities and Local Government|date=16 June 2011|accessdate=6 June 2014}} The parish now shares a grouped parish council with Haverah Park. Until 1974 it was part of the West Riding of Yorkshire.{{Cite web |title=History of Beckinshaw, in Harrogate and West Riding |url=https://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/place/24184 |access-date=15 April 2025 |website=A Vision of Britain}} From 1974 to 2023 it was part of the Borough of Harrogate, it is now administered by the unitary North Yorkshire Council.

In 1875, a reservoir was built to the west of the village. Known as Ten Acre Reservoir, it actually only covered {{convert|7.7|acre}}.{{cite web |title=Ten Acre Reservoir, North Yorkshire |url=http://www.britishlakes.info/30102-ten-acre-reservoir-north-yorkshire |website=britishlakes.info |accessdate=7 December 2018}} In 2016, a report was commissioned into its future as the dam head was known to be failing. In 2019, it will be drained so that it only contains {{convert|5,000|m3|order=flip|0}} of water to relieve pressure on the dam head and will also be converted into a wildlife area.{{cite news |last1=Beard |first1=Alexander |title=Yorkshire Water's plans for decommissioning Harrogate reservoir |url=https://www.harrogateadvertiser.co.uk/news/yorkshire-water-s-plans-for-decommissioning-harrogate-reservoir-1-9479685 |accessdate=7 December 2018 |work=Harrogate Advertiser |date=6 December 2018}}
