It was initially named Cryptocarya bancroftii, but later transferred to the genus Beilschmiedia in 1918 by Cyril Tenison White.{{cite web |url=http://www.anbg.gov.au/cgi-bin/apni?TAXON_NAME=Beilschmiedia+bancroftii|title= Beilschmiedia bancroftii|accessdate=31 July 2011 |work= Australian Plant Name Index (APNI), IBIS database|publisher = Centre for Plant Biodiversity Research, Australian Government, Canberra}}
