The Benary reaction is an organic reaction. In 1931 Erich Bénary{{cite journal|doi=10.1002/cber.19300630641|title=Über die Einwirkung von Ammoniak und Aminen auf einige aliphatische und aromatische Oxymethylen-ketone|year=1930|last1=Benary|first1=Erich|journal=Berichte der Deutschen Chemischen Gesellschaft (A and B Series)|volume=63|issue=6|pages=1573–1577}}{{cite journal|doi=10.1002/cber.19310640935|title=Über eine Bildungsweise ungesättigter Ketone aus substituierten Amino-methylenketonen|year=1931|last1=Benary|first1=Erich|journal=Berichte der Deutschen Chemischen Gesellschaft (A and B Series)|volume=64|issue=9|pages=2543–2545}} discovered that β-(N,N-dialkylamino)-vinyl ketones reacted with Grignard reagents in a 1,4-addition to give α,β-unsaturated ketones, α,β-unsaturated aldehydes and α,β-unsaturated esters as well as poly-unsaturated ketones and aldehydes{{cite journal|title=A Stereospecific Synthesis of (E, Z)-α, β-γ, δ-Diunsaturated Aldehydes, Ketones, and Esters Using the Benary Reaction|doi=10.1002/hlca.19740570507|year=1974|last1=Näf|first1=Ferdinand|last2=Decorzant|first2=René|journal=Helvetica Chimica Acta|volume=57|issue=5|pages=1309}} after hydrolysis of the reaction intermediate and elimination of a dialkylated amine.
