Themes
The editors asked contributors to "imagine a different landscape... some milieu that had not happened" and then address the theme of Alien or Other, with the Other being a lesbian or gay man. However the stories were not specifically aimed at a gay readership.{{citation |url=http://www.locusmag.com/1998/Books/Profiles1019.html |title=Profiles of Recent Books from reviews in Locus Magazine |date=19 October 1998 |accessdate=16 October 2008 |periodical=Locus }}{{citation |first=Wendy |last=Pearson |title=Identifying the Alien: Science Fiction Meets Its Other |periodical=Science Fiction Studies |url=http://www.depauw.edu/SFs/backissues/77/pearson-rev77.htm |issue=77 |volume=Part 1 |series=26 |date=March 1999 |accessdate=16 October 2008 |url-status=dead |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20081004111316/http://www.depauw.edu/SFs/backissues/77/pearson-rev77.htm |archivedate=4 October 2008 |df=dmy-all }} Mark R. Kelly's review in locus magazine bemoaned the anthologies lack of thematic breadth.
