New Jersey Assembly

In the 2021 general election, McCarthy Patrick, together with her Republican running mates Beth Sawyer in the Assembly and Edward Durr in the Senate, knocked off Democratic incumbents Stephen M. Sweeney in the Senate and John Burzichelli and Adam Taliaferro in the Assembly. Before the election, the district had been viewed as a "solidly 'blue'" safe district for Democrats.Smith, Joseph P. Accessed January 10, 2022. "Durr and GOP General Assembly running mates Bethanne McCarthy Patrick and Beth Sawyer, based on unofficial final results Wednesday, have flipped the solidly 'blue' Third Legislative District into the Republican column. It has been two decades since a Republican represented the Third District in the Senate or Assembly. Generally, Democratic state Sen. Stephen M. Sweeney and Assemblymen John Burzichelli and Adam Taliaferro were regarded as overseeing a safe district."

McCarthy Patrick was one of a record seven new Republican Assemblywomen elected in the 2021 general election, joining seven Republican women incumbents who won re-election that year.DiFilippo, Dana. Accessed January 10, 2022. "Indeed, it was a record-setting year for Republican women, with voters last week electing as many as seven female GOP newcomers to the Assembly — the most ever, according to the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University (the Associated Press has still not called some of the races). The previous record was four in 2007, said Debbie Walsh, the center’s director.... Seven other incumbent Republican women held onto seats in the Legislature, as well."

In the 2023 New Jersey General Assembly election, McCarthy Patrick and her running mate Thomas J. Tedesco were defeated by Democratic challengers Heather Simmons and David Bailey.Connolly, John.
